Sexual Exploitation, Prostitution & Porn, The Gangs New Bling Bling
This session examines the disturbing role that females are now being subjected into to support the gang/drug subculture. What steps that we can take towards prevention and intervention. It’s sad to know that from a recent survey of 8th grade girls, the #3 occupation of choice is an “Exotic Dancer” (stripper)...An in-depth look at the recruitment phase and progression that is used. From Gentleman’s clubs, Music video’s to prostitution and the porn industry. The central focus of the analysis is the scope and extent of sexual violence and exploitation. Actual cases will be investigated in review to show the rising participation of girls and women which are being victimized and used to promote and finance today’s gang.
“Bad Girls, Bad Girls” Watcha Gonna Do? Violence Prone At-Risk Females
Are girls a problem? Utilizing role-plays, during this high energy, interactive presentation, the participants will examine violence prone at-risk girls. Their past, present and future role involvement in the different types of gangs or cliques. How to identify the characteristics and potential of violence of these girls, and how cultural differences can determine how you communicate with them instituting intervention techniques.

Criminal Occults, Satanism and the Goth Culture...
This quote from Marilyn Manson sums up the hopelessness and anger of some of our youth that have been caught up in the satanic web. Did you know that 80% of the assailants in the multiple school shooting incidents in the last four years was associated with a occultic group or hate group? For the last ten years while we have been expending a lot of our energy combating street gangs (as we should), another gang has been growing at an astounding rate.
This workshop will explore youth involved in the occult and the Goth movement. You will gain an understanding of the history, signs and symbols, the different levels of involvement, and the possible outcomes of sustained involvement. You will also gain knowledge on the correlation between occultic groups and hate groups.
Guns, Gangs and Terrorists: the “No-Good” Combination.
This entertaining course will focus on federal laws as tools for law enforcement to target and de-activate their community’s most dangerous offenders. From firearms restrictions to RICO organized crime cases, a course participant will enjoy becoming familiar with valuable resources that are available. Case studies will highlight successes and illustrate room for improvement amongst gang interdictions professionals. As always, Mr. Huber will attempt to inject levity and humor into the discussion to help underscore important points.
Hip Hop and Gang Culture. The Influence on Youth.
Examining culture from the 60’s to the present and the growing influence of Hip Hop on our youth of today.
Regional Update on Hispanic Gangs
Hispanic gangs are the fastest growing gangs on the streets in the Salt Lake Valley. Recruitment is at an all time high, and new members are becoming younger and younger. Violence between Hispanic gang sets is also becoming prevalent on our streets and shootings are occurring on nearly a weekly basis. This class will focus on current Hispanic gang trends and recruitment methods in the Salt Lake Metro Area.
“The Sociological Impact of The Media on Today’s Youth”
This workshop examines the media and the role it plays in the elevated level of aggression and sexual promiscuity in today’s youth. In examining the impact that today’s movies, music, and video games are having in shaping the psyche’s of our youth, it is no longer a surprise we are encountering tremendously higher levels of violence and sexual aggression at a younger age and larger number in our youth that has ever been seen before. This interactive workshop, utilizing short audio and video clips will explore the norms of 30 years ago and compare them with today. Question of how things have changed, to what extent and where are we headed will come to light. Getting a handle on understanding hidden agenda’s of the media world will assist the participants with intervention techniques. There may even be some dancing!
Motorcycle Gangs
Participants will receive updated information on the major outlaw motorcycle gangs in Utah and the United States. There will be information on the crimes, tactics, and culture of bikers.
YOUTH GANGS….A Reality Check!
This class will focus on a dangerous lifestyle that has become very attractive to our youth. The gang lifestyle has crossed all ethnic and socioeconomic boundaries. Learn what is influencing our youth to become involved in this way of life, what the warning signs are and what we can do about it. It’s time to stop the denial and start focusing on a solution.
Class DescriptionsPresenters BiographiesDetective Brett Miller
Detective Brett Miller has been in law enforcement for approximately nine years. He got his start in law enforcement in the United States Marine Corps where he was a Sergeant of Marines investigating juvenile and gang related crimes aboard the base. Upon being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, he was hired by the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office where he worked as a Deputy Sheriff until joining the newly formed Taylorsville City Police Department. While at Taylorsville Police Department Detective Miller was assigned to the Directed Enforcement Unit. Detective Miller has been assigned to the Metro Gang Unit and Joint Criminal Apprehension Team for approximately seven months.
DeLano Gilkey
DeLano Gilkey, Director National Youth Violence Consultants...... DeLano is a Security Manager for the University Of Phoenix Stadium and the NFL Superbowl, a Certified Gang Specialist/Special Agent for the National Gang Crime Research Center and the Director of the National Youth Violence Consultants (NYVC). When in Florida he was a Sgt./Supervisor for the Seminole Regional Juvenile Detention Center, a Supervisor and Trainer for NBC/Universal Studios Security Team. While in Illinois, DeLano was a Consultant and Director of Prevention Services/Safe Schools/Truancy for the
Rock Island County Regional Office Of Education. He has over fifteen years experience in Gang/Drug violence prevention and intervention, and occult/satanism intervention. Past member of the Midwest Gang Investigators Association and the past secretary of the Iowa/Illinois Bi-State Gang Intelligence Association. DeLano also held the position of Vice President of the Illinois School Resource Officers Association.
Detective Jared Nichols
Detective Jared Nichols has been in law enforcement for over six years. Detective Nichols spent his first two years with Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office working as a Correctional Officer. In 2001 Detective Nichols was hired by South Jordan Police Department where he worked in the Patrol Division. Detective Nichols was assigned to the Metro Gang Unit in June 2005.
Investigator Jeremy Poor
Investigator Jeremy Poor began his law enforcement career in 1997. He went to work for the Utah Department of Corrections (DOC), where he was employed as a Security Enforcement Officer, later promoted to Security Enforcement Sergeant. In 2000, was promoted as an Agent with Adult Probation & Parole (DOC). In December 2004, he was assigned as an Investigator II with the Law Enforcement Bureau (DOC), and contracted to the Juvenal Justice Services, where he was assigned to the Metro Gang Unit. In February 2006, he was promoted to Investigator III. In addition to his regular duties he is assigned to the Metro Gang Unit, and currently is a member of the Investigation Unit.
Detective Jeremy Sharp
Detective Jeremy Sharp has been a Corrections Officer at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail for nine years. He has been on the CIRT team since 2000 and is the Security Threat Information Officer for the Jail. Jeremy handles internal gang related issues, assists outside agencies with investigations and is the coordinator of an intelligence gathering unit within the Jail known as the Jail Security Threat Information Committee (JSTIC). Jeremy has been a CIRT team instructor and is a member of the Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard. Jeremy works closely with the Sheriff’s Office Training Unit to develop and provide training on an array of different subjects to members of the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office as well as other correctional facilities and law enforcement agencies in Utah and surrounding states. Jeremy has been a member of the Metro Gang Unit for five years and is assigned to the Special Projects/Investigations Unit.
Assistant United States Attorney
Assistant United States Attorney, John Huber presently serves as the Anti-Terrorism coordinator for Utah, overseeing investigations and prosecutions involving both domestic and international terrorism. He has previously served as Utah Project Safe Neighborhood’s (“PSN”) coordinator from 2004 to 2007 where his team prosecuted over 1000 federal gun crime offenders. Along with his anti-terrorism duties, John enjoys his role as the liaison between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and gang crime investigators throughout the state. As such, he coordinates the office’s RICO gang prosecutions and investigations. Prior to permanently joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, John served as the Chief Prosecutor in West Valley City, specializing in domestic violence prosecutions. In 2004, John was nationally recognized and received the
United States Attorney General’s Award for his contributions to public safety partnerships. He has presented multiple times for the Utah Prosecution Council and also speaks at the regional and national level on the topic of federal firearms laws.
Detective George Chavez
Detective George Chavez has been in Law Enforcement for twenty years.
The last 15 have been in Madison. Detective Chavez has been a member of
the Dane County Narcotics and Gangs Task Force and has been the gang
liaison officer since 1997. Detective Chavez has been the South Central
Wisconsin Coordinator for the Midwest Gang Investigators Association,
Vice President of the Wisconsin Chapter of the Great Lakes International
Gang Investigators Coalition and currently the Midwest Representative for
the International Latino Gang Investigators Association. Detective Chavez
is a certified instructor in the State of Wisconsin. Detective Chavez is
currently assigned to the Criminal Intelligence Section of the Madison
Police Department as a gang investigator.
Officer Lester Moore
Officer Lester Moore has served in Law Enforcement for ten years. He has
worked as a beat officer and neighborhood officer in the City of Madison’s
most challenged area. Prior to serving as a police officer, Lester spent six
years serving in the United States Marine Corps and with the Special
Assistant to the United States Attorney at Marine Corps Base Quantico
Virginia. Lester is currently a uniformed officer assigned to the Dane
County Narcotics and Gangs Task Force and is the units Gang Specialist.
Lester has assisted in training for officers in Dane County and Jefferson
County on gang identification and intelligence gathering strategies.
Detective Lex Bell
Detective Lex Bell has been with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office for eight years. In Feb. 2004 he was assigned to the Metro Gang Unit where he has spent time in suppression, narcotics and most recently in the special projects squad. Detective Bell has been recognized by the Third District Court as an expert witness in gang cases. During the past year Detective Bell was elected a regional representative for the Utah Gang Investigators Association (UGIA). In 2005, Bell was awarded the Detective of the Year Award by the Salt Lake Area Gang Project/Metro Gang Unit. Detective Bell is also a sniper on the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team. Detective Bell holds an A.S. with honors in Criminal Justice and a B.A. cum laude in Criminal Law with a Spanish Minor from Weber State University.
Detective Nate Clark
Detective Nate Clark has been employed as a Deputy with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office since January 2000. He has worked mostly on graveyards serving the cities of Bluffdale, Herriman, Riverton, Copperton, Draper, White City, Cottonwood Heights, Holladay and Millcreek. He was assigned to the Metro Gang Unit in May of 2006 where he works in suppression.
Pete Walters
Pete Walters has been employed by UDOC since 1996. He has worked as an Officer in the Maximum Security housing units, including the Maximum Security STG Unit and as an FTO. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2000 and Security Threat Group Facility Coordinator in 2001. In 2007 he transferred to the UDC Law Enforcement Bureau as an Investigator where his main focus is on Gangs. He has lectured on Gangs at Utah Valley State College and Westminster College in Utah. He has taught Gangs/Gang Updates for both Academy Pre-service and Staff in-service for the Department of Corrections and at County Jails in Utah. He has given training on Gangs for Rocky Mountain High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (RMHIDTA) and at the Annual Utah Gang Conference. He is the Vice President of the Utah Gang Investigator Association and has tested and received a Gang Professional Certification from the UGIA.
Richard R. Ramos
Richard R. Ramos is widely recognized throughout the U.S. as an expert on gang prevention and one of the most sought after Latino leaders and speakers on progressive and effective community leadership. With a twenty-eight year history of service, Richard brings a fresh leadership voice and vision that inspires and instructs individuals, families and communities on how to address today's real issues and develop a better quality of life for all. Ramos has written two books on gang prevention and intervention; Gang Prevention and Schools – The Ultimate Parent & Teacher Guide on how to prevent kids from joining Gangs (2008) and Got Gangs? – Practical Guidance for Parents/Teachers on a Mission for Gang Prevention/Intervention (2006). He is also the author of How to be a Great Latino Leader (2008) and Co-
founder of the Latino Coalition for Faith & Community Initiatives, a national nonprofit whose purpose is to strengthen and expand the capacity of nonprofits serving at-risk Latino youth and families. Under his leadership, the Latino Coalition is now working in more than twenty cities in seven states. Ramos' background has helped shape his unique blend of leadership qualities. Early in his career he served as a correctional officer in both state and federal prisons, a Juvenile Hall instructor and at-risk junior high and high school counselor, co-founding director of a gang intervention/prevention community coalition, director of a Latino youth and family Teen Center, Senior Pastor for sixteen years, and founding director of the Interfaith Initiative of Santa Barbara County. For his work in the field of human rights and interfaith understanding, he has received numerous accolades and awards.
Detective Rick Simonelli
Detective Rick Simonelli has been with the United States Marshals Service (USMS) for seven years. He started his career in Washington D.C., prior to moving to Utah in 2003. He was assigned to the Joint Criminal Apprehension Team prior to coming to the Metro Gang Unit in July 2004. Within the unit, he is assigned as a gang investigator. He was named 2005 Officer of the Year for the Metro Gang Unit. He received the 2007 Utah Gang Investigators Association Distinguished Service Award. He also serves as a member of the executive board for the Utah Gang Investigators Association.
Detective Scott Hansen
Detective Scott Hansen has been with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office for 11 years. He spent the first six months as a Corrections Officer assigned to the old Metro Jail. Detective Hansen spent the next three years assigned to South Patrol as a patrol deputy. Detective Hansen spent the next several years as a C.O.P/Property Crimes detective in the Cottonwood Heights area. Detective Hansen was assigned to the Metro Gang Unit in October of 2004 as the SHOCAP Coordinator. Detective Hansen also serves as a member of the executive board of the recently formed Utah Gang Investigators Association.
Detective Steve Wozab
Detective Steve Wozab has been with the Salt Lake City Police Department for 10 years and is now assigned to the Metro Gang Unit. Detective Wozab worked both East and West Patrol Divisions. Detective Wozab was a Field Training Officer for 3 years is part of the Public Order Unit and a fire arms instructor. Detective Wozab also worked for the Department of Corrections for 2 years before going to Salt Lake City Police. Detective Wozab served 6 years in the Army.
