5 Tips for Becoming a Detective

5 Tips for Becoming a Detective

Andrew Hawks

Make Solid, Good Arrests

When you make arrest out on the street, make sure that your reports are clear and concise and meet all the elements of the offense. Use your spell check. Remember, the division that will promote you is reading and reviewing your current reports, and they will want detectives with intelligence, that can read and write properly, and know how to enforce the law and file a good case.

Hopefully following these tips will help you on your way to the investigative division in your department. You may even end up working a high profile case one day and heck; those Hollywood producers may even come knocking on your door, wanting to make you the next Sgt. Joe Friday….

Work hard and stay safe.

The most important piece of advice that I found here is the "Work Hard" section. I can recall the motto of an old homicide detective who once said, " The good detective is the investigator who when all leads have been exhausted, knocks on one more door." There is nothing like being persistent, education is fine we need to know how to write, but it doesn't make you persistent. The detective who takes the attitude, I will hunt down every predator that comes across my desk with logic, steady and consistent pressure, will normally win in the end!

lol i think its quite funny to watch cop shows on tv because i sit thru the whole thing picking out what they do wrong, like picking up crime scene evidence with no gloves, or walking right thru the crime scene ect... im not even a cop, but im smart enough to know to leave it to the pro"s.

BUMP to that PSD!! I've actually gone on calls in security where the complainant starts by saying "I watch (insert show name here) so I know forensics." I've had to resist the urge to groan and facepalm every time.

Tip #6...stop watching NCIS, Criminal Minds, Cold Case...etc etc....concentrate on being a cop first
