Study for the Exam
If your agency gives a detective test, I recommend that you study for it continually, even when there may not be any available openings. Always be prepared to take it and you will score high.

The most important piece of advice that I found here is the "Work Hard" section. I can recall the motto of an old homicide detective who once said, " The good detective is the investigator who when all leads have been exhausted, knocks on one more door." There is nothing like being persistent, education is fine we need to know how to write, but it doesn't make you persistent. The detective who takes the attitude, I will hunt down every predator that comes across my desk with logic, steady and consistent pressure, will normally win in the end!

lol i think its quite funny to watch cop shows on tv because i sit thru the whole thing picking out what they do wrong, like picking up crime scene evidence with no gloves, or walking right thru the crime scene ect... im not even a cop, but im smart enough to know to leave it to the pro"s.

BUMP to that PSD!! I've actually gone on calls in security where the complainant starts by saying "I watch (insert show name here) so I know forensics." I've had to resist the urge to groan and facepalm every time.
