Photos From the Police Week 2010's Candlelight Vigil
Chris McConnell and Kevin Powers | PoliceLink

The names of 324 law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice and died in the line of duty were dedicated at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC Thursday evening.
The names of those officers killed were read by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., Jennifer Thacker, national president of the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) as well as other notable figures.
Of these officers dedicated, 116 died in 2009, the lowest number of fatalities since 1959.
PoliceLink attended the vigil and were able to capture just a small part of this solemn occasion.

I also attended the Candlelight Vigil this year and was blown away. I had tears in my eyes and had goosebumps. I hope my Agency sends me again next year. I will keep all of the officers that are on the wall and their families in my prayers. God Bless everyone who payed the ultimate sacrifice doing what they loved and keeping the streets safe for the rest of us.

police officers' prayer
when i start my tour of duty, God, wherever crime may be, as I patrol the darkened streets alone, let me be close to thee. Please give me understanding with both the young and the old. Let me listen with attention until their story is told. Let me never make a judgment in a rash or callous way, but let me hold my patience and let each man have his say. Lord, if some dark dreary night, I must give my life, Lord, with your everlasting love, protect my children and my wife

All the darkness cannot overcome the light of one small candle. I am honored to have been there for for the 2010 ceremony, standing next to the wall carving for our Dallas Police Officer who was killed January 6, 2009.

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Good bless all the Brothers and Sisters who sacrificed their lives in the line of Duty. We have to thank all of the officers who helped put this event together. Wish I could have been there. Maybe next year.
