Thank God Chicago wasn't on the list. After 30 + years (retired in 2003) those who are left are in a terrible way. Led by a coward who runs away from gunfire leaving his troops in the lurch, and morale in the toilette this is not a place to go for a LEO career.

#10 Salt lake city police department is a decent department, but they haven't hired anyone new in a long time, plus the police chief is a total idiot, and a lot of the officers in the dept. wish he would pack his bags and leave.

Can't believe Portland is #8. I work in corrections and I wouldn't be a cop in this city for anything. The cops have no support from the police chief or police commissioner. The police commissioner is a city council member and a complete idiot, in my opinion. The cops every move is scrutinized and that hack Jesse Jackson even came here to chastise the cops. Unbelievable.

Arlington and Alexandria are great places to work. I just retired from the DC Police Department with over 28 years of service. Morale there is at an all time low and the Mayor has proposed NO PAY RAISE for seven years! Members of the Department are looking forward to the fall elections and the chance of the Mayor losing and the Chief of Police being replaced. My recommendation - go anywhere but DC.

Looks like a list of larger cities not the best place to work. Huntsville Alabama has a starting salary of 36,712. with a much smaller population. We have good equipment and take home cars.
