Funny...I recall seeing a Top 20 List a few months back. None of these Dept's were listed, if I remember correctly. Just a side note...Va Beach PD starts about $43,000 after 6 years your eligible for MPO which is an increase to about $57,000 with plenty of OT and PT. Cost of living is comparable to other Beach Cities. Va Beach has about 500,000 year round residents and probably 1,500,000 in the summer months. Listed as one of the safest Cities of its size in US.

Hilo, HI. is the best place to be a cop, they pay better than any on this list. The violent crime rate there is very low and since there are no marked cruisers in their jurisdiction you get to pick your own vehicle from a variety of new cars that can be retrofitted with the police package and all the gas is paid for. I think I'll pick the GTO! Of course you don't get the nifty "Grapefruit Police" badge.

I have to say, I work for Washington DC Police. Our starting salary is approx. 10k higher than any dept. listed here. Also, we are currently experiencing a hiring freeze that will be only a short time we hear. But this is the first hiring freeze they have had in a long time. Also, there have never been lay offs as far as I am told. Our nation's capital? I think we are pretty secure. Great pay, and you don't have to live in DC. I think we should have made this list.

Not suprised that the NYPD wasn't listed. Let's see...99% of cop shows? NYPD detectives. Greatest city on Earth? New York City. Who does the most with the least? NYPD. But with all due respect to my brothers in blue, those in the know, know that the NYPD is the best in the world and the most coveted position in law enforcement is to be a NYPD detective. We're not the highest paid, just the best! "Overworked and underpaid, still the greatest detectives (and P.O's) in the world"!

Steve Forbes (Forbes.com) is the same clown that does NOT want to allow collective bargaining in right to work states for Law Enforcement! Funny how he can cherry pick some of those departments that enjoy that right on his list of best places to work.
Check out H.R. 413 and S. 1611. Forbes thinks everyone is going on strike as soon as it passes. I don't think he has read it. There is a no strike clause in the bill.

I live in a town of 17,757 people and the starting salary for a police officer is 38,700..... you would think in a bigger city the pay would be better..... guess not!

show me the money....taking a job in anyone of these top 10 cities would require a significant cut in pay...Although, they clearly aren't the crap holes we have to police out here in LA County...I like the size and locations of the communities, sounds like a great place to retire and live...I have ten more years to do in this little "OBAMAVILLE" I work in, then, I'm running for the hills with my assault rifle and a ton of ammo...Will the last patriot in California take the flag with him when he/she leaves...

On a funny note, did anyone else see the humor in the Mission, TX police patch? The patch could be taken to mean that they are the "grapefruit police". Ok, just a light hearted post. A safe and happy holiday season to all my brothers and sisters in the business.

I find it very hard to believe that Jackson P. D. , Jackson, Ms, is rated the third best place for police officers. I retired from there and worked in Internal Affairs and along with the FBI conduct corruption investigations. Someone did not ask the right people.
