PoliceLink's Patrol Car Guide

Kevin Powers | PoliceLink

Carbon Motors E7

yet released, Carbon Motors is set to make a car designed from the start with law enforcement in mind.

The car will be built to last 250,000 miles, almost double that of a traditional patrol car, and is expected to get better gas mileage than current patrol cars.

Video: Carbon Motors E7 is previewed in D.C.

As far as specifics for law enforcement, the company plans on adding ballistic protection to the frond doors and dash panel, designing a seat that allows better access to on-body equipment, and will include 360-degree surveillance capability for recording.

Like many other popular police cruisers, the E7 will be built with rear wheel drive for better handling, include a 3.0L diesel engine, and come with a six speed automatic transmission.

I'd prefer a crown Vic... but if I had to have something else I'd have a Chevrolet Caprice.

OK....I'll show my age. Anyone remember the Chevy Malibu from the early 1980's? My old department had them and let me tell you...they were AWESOME! Equipped with a 350, these cars combined decent room with incredible performance. They were quick and handled very well. The 1983 was, I think, the last year they were made and were by far the best. I'd put it up against almost anything as far as handling. I have, at some point, driven most all others, with the exception of the new Charger. I hear they are amazing but lack interior room.

The statutes and specs for pursuit ratings vary from department to department. Here in AZ, we have slightly different quals than say Denver or San Antonio. Because of this, what the Auto Makers have done is attempted to design an "all-in-one" system that meets or exceeds the most common needs for ALL LEO's throughout the country. As you read about the CVPI, Ford has held a 15 year majority grip on the market. The only reason they announced the cancellation of the CVPI is because of the new Chevy/GM Caprice release. I was lucky enough to have seen a test model during a live demo a few weeks back while vacationing in California. All I will say is Ford is doomed unless they totally rethink their designs and stop building their unit from existing civilian makes. The new Caprice has/offers/is EVERYTHING any LEO ever DREAMED of! Power out the @$$, handles like jet fighter, and even sounds like the big dog on the block that it is. The interior looks, and feels like they molded it from a dream. ROOOOOOOOOMMYYY!!!!Easy access to all the right plugs and ports, and the laptop stations are literally at the fingertips! Holding my breathe for the rollout!

What is pursuit rating? I have tried to research and find out exactly what that means and have found nothing. Anyone have details or facts about that.

The E7 is a spectacular car. It's practically a real-life Knight Rider. I hope they are in use when I get back from tour and get my first police job!

I was lucky enough in my career to go full circle. I started with a 1977 Dodge Royal Monaco with the 440 Magnum motor. It was fast but not too nimble. Then into the diplomats, I swear they came from the factory with squeaks and rattles. We even had a 6 cylinder diplomat, a true embarassment. Then the box like Caprices, a real cure for insomnia. Those cars were durable but nothing awe inspiring. And then the Caprice 9C1 with the LT1 engine. Fast, comfortable, and they didnt look too bad. I currently drive a Crown Vic PI as my personal car as I need my car for my civilan job. It at least deserves honorable mention. Its pretty fast, comfortable but handles in the rain worse than anything I have ever seen. Makes me miss the old days.

From the non-LEO and huge supporter, it is time to replace the old Crown Vic's, as I can spot the signature front end (marked or unmarked) from half a mile (to a mile at night) at highway speeds!

Years ago I was approached by three undercover cops from a beat up mk3 Ford Zephyr. While attempting to show respect it was all I could do to not laugh!

As I'm from over the pond I have to say that top of my list of old patrol cars would be the Rover SD1 3500. They were way infront of the game when first used.
Today give me a Range Rover everytime.
