Ten Greatest American Police Patrol Cars

Matt Hardigree | Jalopnik

9. Chevy Bel Air Police Car (Texas)

Nothing says U.S. of A. like a Chevy Bel Air. This Chevy had the size and power to meet the duties of a civil servant and the look to scare criminals into pulling over. Topped with a big red cherry, you’d know what to do when you saw one of these bad boys. This particular Texas-badged 1955 Chevy Bel-Air is a prime example of the timeless design [BillWindsor.com]

i always liked the Chevy Novas but my favorite was the 1974 Ford Gran Torino. It had great handling and was sized to be a good work environment.

Too many specialty vehicles listed. Who here drives a paddy wagon or a dune buggy? Get rid of the Mustang and Camaro. Let's keep this at the car the rookie out of the academy would have driven in their day.

Definitely add the mid 90's Caprices. Corvette motor was mis-information. It was the 285 hp 350 straight out of the Z28 Camaro at the time. Those cars were FAST! Handled well too, although not as well in wet or snow.

Got to asgree with the indestructibility of the late 8o's Diplomats. Ran the P!$$ out of mine and couldn't kill it. Wasn't much for power, but if you flipped the air filter cover upside down it was way loud and sounded cool.

Wasn't here for them, but our department had 1970 Pontiac LeMans' with small-block 400's in them. These things SCREAMED - just don't ask them to stop. The brakes were good for 2 or 3 stops before they were toast.

2010 is the last year for the VIC. Ford is tooling heavier parts for the - don't shoot the messenger here - Taurus. YIKES, I said it. I choked too when I heard it.

For you "Bow Tie" lovers like me, Chevy is bringing back a larger rear-wheel drive version of the Impala. They may transfer the name over, but they may also bring back the Caprice monaker for it. It's based off of an Austrailian model platform, kind of like they did with the GTO. Hopefully it runs like a Chevy!!!

yes that is true that ford is discontinuing making the crown vic's. Carbon motors is coming out with a car in 2012 that is suppose to be the police car of the future. It was designed by policeman, for policeman. If you would like to know more about it check out : www.carbonmotors.com

I used to drive the old Chevrolet Caprice, I think it was an 84 or 85. It was fast and heavy. Much faster than our current Interceptors.

Where's the 77-95 Chevy's? Caprice Classic or Impala (with the exception of those couple years of the land vessel, the91'ish Caprice) 350 LT1 Corvette engine, great styling, awesome handling, safe......they were tanks!

I hear ford will discontinue making the interceptor. Does anyone know if this is true??? Imean how could Ford be so dumb and discontinue their money maker. I personally love the charger, better than the Interceptor in everyway. The only complaint is that the interior is a little small with all the computer equipement that my agencies puts in it but I can live with that.

One other car that has been left out and from long experience the Chevy Caprice 1989- 1991 model to me was the all time best not only for safety but performance. Who could imagane a car that size not only ran tops speeds of 130+ but also handled as good as a Camaro . I turned down a Mustang 5.0 to stay in my old Caprice it was finaly taken out of service in 1994 after a head on TC this car saved my life.

My favorite was the 90's caprice. Plenty of room for your stuff. The one I was assigned was the fastest in the fleet, handled well and was the least amount of maintainance of all the vehicles in the department. This car could catch just about anything, even when they really did not want to talk to me.

I always loved the camaro I had a n unmarked one It handled great and had great power.I have driven the charger & the magnum as well, both are good handling vehicles. I still would have to say the interceptor (crown vic) is my overall favorite. I have a new blk & white one as a take home very nice ride and plenty of room.I remember alot of these older patrol cars I have pictures of some of them with my dad & grandfather both retired NYPD detectives.

The new dodge police car is one of the worst patrol vehicle on the roadway. Your vison is so impared all round you that you you are so busy paying attention on not running into something or someone you cant do your job on the street. They should be outlawed for sale to any police department. And they ride like a tank by the time your shift is over your need medical help with your back as well. Your need to test drive for sure before you purchase one for at least a week.
