Ten Greatest American Police Patrol Cars

Matt Hardigree | Jalopnik

8. Border Patrol Dune Buggy (Arizona)

Specifically, a Desert Patrol Vehicle (DPV), these are some of the most extreme police vehicles used for active patrolling duty. Typically, a DPV is fitted with a VW engine capable of nearly 200 HP. These vehicles can travel up to 80 mph and generally encounter some of the roughest terrain in the country while enduring severe temperature conditions. These go fast in places that Border Patrol SUV’s can’t even reach.

Michigan State Police did not get rid of the big red cherry on top. They still have to single dual light beacon on the roof. So please dont get it confused. They still look like rolling blue berries with a red light on the roof.

Wow the memories; I remember the 1978 Plymouth 440 fury. These were old Oklahoma Highway Patrol cars, the city purchased. Double model 14 cherry red lights and a siren speaker in the middle. You were not cool unless you also had a red spotlight on the right side. You could hear your back-ups engine roar before you heard his siren. Those cars would never stop gaining speed, but you only had three shots at the brakes. After that you had no brakes at all. AM radios with an FM converter for night shift was the only extra option. Plymouth Volares were also in service, but most of those had a 318 engine. The real dog of that time was a Ford product, I don’t remember the model, but it was not a LTD or Crown Vic. It had a six cylinder engine. These did not last very long, due to hard service. Of all the Squad Cars I have been issued the 1978 Fury was the best.

I remember in '68 when I got home from Nam and bought my stepbrothers '57 chevt ex drag care and thought it was fast. That is until a CHP Plymouth freeway cruiser pulled up next to me at a red light. When the light changed, he took off bumping and bouncing and finally getting into the torque curve at around 30-35. That told me all I needed to know. At freeway speeds he was probably just above idle. Awesome machine.

I think they need to make police cars faster with better handling. I own a 08 Toyota Tundra 5.7 liter V-8, with an exaust and intake sytem that has over 420 HP. Can the regular police cars beat that? I don't think so, unless it was a highway patrol with the hemmies in it, like the Mustang or the Dodge with the hemmie. Correct me if I'm wrong please?

I own a retired 03 Vic, and it's a nice car. Interceptors are made more for durability than lighting the tires on fire now.

Drove patrol cars from 1977 to 2008.. my top cars were an early 1980s Chevy Nova 4-Door handles like a go cart was roomy interior and was crash safe when car safety was not a high priorty. A mid 1990 Chevy Caprice LT-1 was my second choice. Chevy should still be making both models for local and highway patrol use comaped to the modern junk being made today.

Back in 78 when I was a Campus Police Officer , I was tasked with purchasing a Cruiser for the Campus Police at Worcester State College. A friend of mine that went to the auction picked me up an "OLD MASS. STATE POLICE TURNPIKE CRUISER" fondly known as a "Blue Bird". 1974 Station Wagon with a 459 Lincoln Motor. I use to take it up to the Worcester Airport an wring it out every night along with the Chief of Airport Security. The little monster would do an honest 145. Needless to say they never had me buy another Cruiser for the School. Nice car to chug around the campus in though. I still have my reservations about the E-7, "THE MANAGEMENT NEVER DID ANSWER MY QUESTIONS ABOUT IT'S SAFETY". No hard point roll cage , explosive rear curtain on front/back cage made of lexan that will explode if impacted on the door post, and I have never seen a Diesel that can keep up with a Gas Motor. Just my opinion!

I love The Michigan State Police Car. Finally they got rid of the red cherry on the top of the car.

I think that the new police cars are the best cars that I have seen by far. I also think that criminals think that their car is the fastest and that they can out run a police car, boy they are dead wrong!!!!!

The most intimidating looking car is the new Dodge Charger. We have one in my department.I have never seen it,but I have seen a photo of it.In our fleet, we still have the Crown Vics.I would love to restore one of those '69 Coronets.I think that one of the ugliest car designs was the '91 Chevy Impala

Well the E-7 by Carbon Motors is going to take over from all prior police cars my memories got back to those old CHP 440 Magnums! That was one bad police car! I vividly remember chasing a runner up I-5 at over 130MPH, (this was back in 73 BTW), when a CHP 440 Magnum blew by me like I was stopped! Fell in love with them at that moment. I driven many in my career from Fords to Chevy's but have to say I really liked the Dodge we had in 1979. The fastest I ever had was the old Ford, (1972), that had a 427 Interceptor in it. That baby would fly! Wouldn't corner worth a rip but it was fast! LOL I love the Charger as I have driven even the SRT-8's and they are wicked fast and handle fantastic so figure the Police Package is nearly as good but I truely believe that Carbon Motors E-7 will be the cutting edge and soon be THE national police car.
