Man Breaks Into Hamptons Home, Falls Asleep

SOUTHAMPTON, NY – Like many summer visitors to the Hamptons, an Arizona man crashed in someone else’s home Sunday morning after a night out at a bar, Southampton police said Monday.

In this case, police said, he was an uninvited guest.

After being dropped off in Bridgehampton, Daniel O. Martineau, 22, broke windows, screens and a door at a house on Lumber Lane before breaking into a small building behind the house, police said.

He was found sleeping in the building at about 10 a.m. Sunday by a caretaker, who called police.

Martineau was charged with third-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal trespass, police said.

Martineau “more than likely” was looking for a place to sleep, said Southampton Det. Timothy Wilson.

“He wasn’t maliciously trying to gain entry” into the house, Wilson said.

Martineau, who was on Long Island visiting a college friend, spent Saturday night drinking with friends at a bar, police said.

After leaving the bar, he was dropped off at Lumber Lane and Narrow Lane in Bridgehampton, police said. Martineau broke several windows at the Lumber Lane house, which was unoccupied at the time, Wilson said. Martineau successfully broke into the building in the backyard, which also was unoccupied, then fell asleep, police said.

Martineau was unable to tell police where he was staying while visiting Long Island, Wilson said.

Martineau posted bail at the police station and will be arraigned at a later date, Wilson said. Martineau could not be reached for comment.
