Inmate fatally stabs murderous convict who shot 6 city cops in '86

BY TINA MOORE DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Friday, February 22nd 2008, 4:00 AM

Larry Davis, who gained notoriety in 1986 when he shot six Bronx cops and was hauled into custody 17 days later, died Wednesday after another inmate repeatedly plunged a homemade knife into his body. Inmate Luis Rosado, 42, was arraigned on murder charges for Davis' killing in the jail about 80 miles north of the city. Convicted killer Larry Davis - one of the most notorious criminals in city history who shot six Bronx cops in 1986 and evaded a manhunt for 17 days - finally met his match. Davis, 41, was serving 25 years to life on an unrelated murder conviction when he was stabbed to death on Wednesday night by another inmate in a prison yard. "I believe that nobody should take joy in the murder of another individual, but if I told you I was weeping I would be lying," former Mayor Ed Koch said. "He was a vicious person, and if there's any justice anywhere he's rotting in hell." Davis was stabbed repeatedly with a 12-by-1-1/2-inch homemade metal knife in the arms, head, leg and chest around 7 p.m. at Shawangunk Correctional Facility. State police said the fatal blow severed the femoral artery in his thigh. Inmate Luis Rosado, 42, was arraigned on murder charges for Davis' killing in the jail about 80 miles north of the city. "Justice has finally prevailed," retired NYPD Lt. Vernon Geberth said Thursday. "The prison system did what the criminal justice system could not." Geberth was the commander of the Bronx homicide squad when Davis opened fire on officers who went to his sister's Morrisania apartment to arrest him on Nov. 19, 1986. Davis was a suspect in six murders - a quadruple killing in a South Bronx drug den and two others in upper Manhattan, Geberth said. Seven officers went inside 1231 Fulton Ave. that day, including Detective Donald O'Sullivan. "Larry was sitting on the couch with a gun in his hand," O'Sullivan, 64, said Thursday. "We kept saying, 'Don't move! Don't move!'" Davis started shooting. "He shot the detective in the face," O'Sullivan said. "Then he shot the policewoman, after that, I got shot in the face. ... We were running out of ammunition." "He had two babies standing in front of him, two kids. ... We had to be very careful. He was that violent a person." O'Sullivan said he was pleased to hear Davis was dead. "Good," he said. "The guy hurt a lot of people." All but one of the other five officers who were injured has since retired. Davis won a small following after a jury acquitted him of attempted murder and assault charges, convicting him instead of weapons charges. But he was convicted of murder in 1991 for killing a drug dealer. "Early on, Davis was a bit of a folk hero because he almost killed cops, but that dissipated," Geberth said. Rosado was jailed in 1983 on murder and assault charges for shooting a man with a shotgun - at point-blank range - in the chest and face, records show. Rosado was denied parole last Oct. 2 at a hearing in which he admitted fashioning a knife from a mirror for protection in prison's "rough environment." He also acknowledged he'd been written up at least 20 times for serious infractions of jail rules.

It often takes time, but the vicious circle is good at working like this. The rule of reciprocity. What goes around, comes around.

You know you're a loser when even the other prisoners want to kill you.

Sometimes it just takes an inmate to do what court justice can't... I know a lot of people who will sleep better knowing he will never be back on the streets.
The six officers who were his victims are still in my thoughts and prayers.
