We're just opening our jail, administration isn't giving us anything on our belt for liablitiy reasons. (Well, we have cuffs) Myself and the other guys would love to have a tazer or at least some spray but its not allowed. We're working in one of the roughest cities in northern Ohio to add spice to the situation. What i'm trying to do here is get a little poll going here to see what everyone has and what you have found that actually works. Any information would be great.

Thanks!

Nothing but cuffs for liability reasons ?

What about the liability of you not being able to properly defend yourself ? I can see if every jail in your state did this but obviously that is not the case. Do you guys have any kind of a union that can go to bat for you ?

inside radio and cuffs.
supervisors carry oc and have access to taser if and when needed.
when on perimeter or transport or anything else, full duty belt.

inside we carry cuffs, oc, flashlights(weapon of nessicity),and radios. for transports or hospital watches we carry pr 24 or straight baton, depending on what cert. you have, and either a glock 22 or 23. luckily we get to use OC alot. as long as we let them wash up in a "reasonable" amount of time we can't get in trouble.

Well, it sounds like we are allowed to carry a ton more than everybody else. We have Freeze+P OC spray, a set of cuffs w/case, Streamlight Stinger flashlight, Motorola 800mhz radios, and latex glove pouch on the belt. I personally carry in my cargo pockets pat down gloves and a CPR one way shield. Only our supervisors are authorized to carry the Tazer. What is nice about our duty belts we just switched from the leather basketweave to Bianchi Molded nylon. For the most part our staff loves the nylon gear because it's so much lighter than the leather.

California is hiring alot of people............. pays very well here.....All of our transport officers carry a taser,we are one of the only facilities that carry them, everyone else at our job carries a flashlight, oc, cuffs, cpr mask, radio and we have access to a shock shield and a very handy pepperball gun but that is a mess for eveybody..cant freakin breath after that.. is this a kinder and gentler facility? f---- that. I would get the hell out of there..you should survey your surrounding counties and submit it through your chain of command cuz this is 2008' not 1960......good luck w/ that and wish you guys the best, stay safe and watch your back they are just asking for a man down and that could be an officer...............bare minimum my ass I bet patrol has all they freakin need..( I'll probably get flack for that one)... I would like to know how many other facilities have bare minimums... please continue this post........It's a good thing you fight in mixed martial arts

Dadgum it sounds like where Im from is better then most other places. I work at the RCDF in TN and we get Freeze+p, radio w/ case, I personally carry at least two prs. of cuffs at all times (sometimes Ive needed to use all of them at once). 2 CPR oneway mouthshields, flashlight, and when on Transport outside of the facility all inmates ar shackeld cuffed and bellychained and were armed before we leave the carport. As far as tazers were probaby never going to get them but our Sergeants and above are certified in Clear Out which is like a smoke canister but instead it has Freeze+P in it. But if all else fails we do have restraint chairs if an inmate gets too out of control so you might wanna have your facility check in that also. As far as liability reason are concerned as long as your facility goes by federal guidleines and policies on what can and cant be done then you should be staright but your use of force continuum will have to be one of your strictest policies in the facility.

You folks have it made......unless you are assigned to the CERT team, you get close to nothing.....regular floor officers in our jail carry a radio, duress pager, glove pouch and cpr mask. Each pod has a cut down tool that we are required to have on our person when we are making our rounds.....Looks like I have the shortest list yet....Before I started working for the county, I worked state DOC and we did carry cuffs, and O.C. so going from that to this took some getting used to......I am now a firm believer in IPC skills......its amazing what you can get an inmate to do (or stop doing) through verbal judo and/or verbal manipulation as I sometimes refer to it......

I'm issued cuffs (sometimes 2 pair) and a radio at my high security facility. Latex and pat-down gloves, CPR shield, and flashlight are not supplied, but can be carried. When working a mental health dorm, I also carry power cutters (scissors).

sabre 5.0, cuffs, radio, gloves(definitely a must), flashlight, radio, and optional knife. We have CPR masks in every unit, but no one carries them. There have been rumors of tasers being approved, but until I have one, they are just rumors.

I work for WA DOC (SEG UNIT) and all I carry is cuffs, a surefire, radio and PPE. After working the units (max thru minimum) I find all I need is good "tactical verbal skills". A weapon makes me feel more comfortable but In reality, it makes me a liability.

Macon county, IL we carry Pepper foam, Radio, Cuffs, Gloves, Flashlight, and qualified officers carry Tazer there are usally two on the floor at a time. we can also carry cut down knifes. Since the Tazers were issued we were told "No more 'Hands on' guys" for alot of us younger guys we hated that cause that was a perc of the job for us. However the number of Officer and Inmate injuries have gone down alot. we have had these Tazers for about a year now and command told us about six months ago that the inmates "only get one chance then light there ass up" once we started using the Tazer more then the inmates relized that we are not taking any more shit. Those of you who dont have or use the Tazer would be amazed how much an imates attitude changes when they see that little red light on their chest. Dont get me wrong we dont run around just Tazing inmates for fun, but it has been moved up to the second step on the use of force, right after verbal command and passive aggresive. They really do work i cant remember the last time I had to go "hands on" with an Inmate. Its much safer for everyone now.

We are issued and required to carry a duty belt, pepper spray, 1 pair of handcuffs and case , a small flashlight, a radio holder, an ASP and a key holder. Some of us also have been issued a holster and mag case. Currently I carry that plus 2 extra pairs of handcuffs and a different flashlight.

In Denver we carry, in the jail, cuffs, OC spray, radio, flashlight, OPN's, mag pouches and holster. Corridor and security officers carry tasers as well. Main Gate and yard officers carry their handguns and the yard officers also have shotguns. Good luck.

I have been a Sheriff's Deputy for going on 4 years. In that time I have carried Tazer x26, saber spray, freeze +p and obviously cuffs and radio. At my former sheriff's office we were commisioned officers able to carry a firearm outside of the facility as well as asp certified. Really depends on the sheriff's office or DOC where you're employed.

I can wish we could carry tazers, but its going to be a while before that happens. We carry a radio, and cuffs, and a Laradel mask, sometime a ppd. But I carry a flashlight, latex gloves, pat down gloves, and a water bottle holder on my belt too. Gas would also be nice to have. And of course if you are perimeter or transport your armed.
