Hey guys, what do you think about
S&W Model 686 Plus Revolver - 6", 7-Shot for a home defense? I really like it and been told that revolvers in general are great for home defense, would like to hear some opinions.

a home is an abstract idea, where do you dwell, house or apt. do you have kids, or spouse? for house defense a shot gun makes the best weapon, depending on where you live for a host of reasons, but to each his own.

2 story house, shot gun would be messy a bit, don't you think?

With a shotgun you stand a better chance of keeping the mess in the house and not the neighbors

worry about your life first. and when you are woke up in the middle of the night in low to no light, you might not be on your game in the first mins of the attack.

Well I don't know what more info to give, just a regular 2 story house, outside brick walls, inside, same crap as in every other house i believe, would like something that wouldn't destroy half my house, and something that wouldn't do more financial damage than a perp stealing a tv or something. Thats why I thought that perhaps a .357 magnum would be nice, powerful enough to prevent my family from getting hurt by some punk, and not as crazy as a shotgun.

its ok to shoot someone with a 357 that is stealing a tv from you , but its crazy to use a shotgun? 00 buck has more of a chance of hanging up in the walls, a 357 can go on forever and that is something i know not what someone told me.

Uhmmm no offense here but something that wouldn’t destroy half your house? Well that’s when insurance comes in handy you shouldn’t need to worry about that part when it comes to self defense.....

Maybe we all should be asking why do you want a gun for protection, is your neighborhood that bad?

Do you live alone? If not, where are the bedrooms of the other residents? What are the walls made of? There's alot to consider.

remember you asked, a shotgun is more user friendly, less feed problems and you dont have to be a expert in tactics, to get by, also a spouse could use it for deterance and defense.nothing like the sound of a shotgun racking, i have used that sound to get attention in large groups when i was out numbered.

Well, in every apt. building live at least 1-5 drug dealers, so to find drugs is easier than anything, prostitution is even easier to find than weed.Stuff happens around here, never know when some random crack head will pick some random house, and it will be mine that time, I guess it's not a bad thing to be ready and have nothing happen to you, rather than think "Oh it'll never happen to me" and one day you win the ticket.

Yeah I agree on the sound part, I've shot from a shot gun a few times before, never thought it would be THAT loud, thank you for all that advice.

Lets say its 3:30 am and you've been sleeping for sometime, and you are awakin by someone breaking in. Your in a sleepy daze. Would you rather have to aim your revolver at the intruder, or would you rather pick up your shot gun, and not have to worry so much about the aiming, and just blast a round off. You'll probably have more luck shooting the intruder with the shotgun then the revolver.
Personally, I have 3 130lb dogs. No need for a shotgun.

Right but you said a house! Big differences... I also never said it couldn’t happen to me because anything can happen, but also I feel that when you attract bad things bad things will come your way... Either way protecting yourself and family is not a bad idea, however one just don’t just go and get a gun unless they are afraid of something and being afraid can be a huge weakness, not to mention getting yourself killed… Your post just came off strange to me is all…

im not trying to sway anyone, i have just done alot of home work on this subject.
my wife has been a expert marksman for 16 years but she has never had to fire under duress, we all have a plan untill we have bullets snap by our heads, some of us here know what that is like and there is no way to tell anyone how to react when that happens, you will revert back to training, for some we will revert back to experance.i do hope no one has to find out how they will hold up under fire in there own home.

Might I mention a light source on the firearm? Target identification is crucial to your legal defense. Don't forget that you just might not be on your A game when your theoretical crackhead visits. Also, shotguns do require sighted fire, so the spray and pray gig won't get it. If your comments on your neighbors is true, maybe relocating to a less crime rich environment might be the best choice.

Right Odin! :P Kidding

I remember so very well when my neighbor shot my dog in my back yard with a .45 that bullet went through my dog, ricochet off the ground and logged into the house not even 4 feet from where my daughter and I was sitting, not to mention I was pregnant at the time as well. Prime example why shot guns are better over other guns...

Oh right, well I don't know what inside walls are made out of , but I'm pretty sure a bullet would go through without a problem, 3 bedrooms on second floor, I live with my gf and my mother at the moment, since in a year hopefully I'll start working and will gladly move the f out,so then first floor has a living room and a kitchen, and a bathroom on each floor as well. Pretty much a typical house, nothing that stands out.

P.S. CloverModerator, I said a house, because I live in one,and I was talking about apt. buildings, because, well in NY, there are a lot of streets where you have apt. buildings on one side of the street and houses on the other.

Well that makes sense, even now days houses are being built pretty damn close to each other, matter of fact most new neighborhoods here, the houses are about 4 feet apart, you could almost reach out your window and touch your neighbors house in some areas...

Since fields of fire and overpenetration are going to be an obvious concern, a shotgun would be your best bet.

i hear rubber band guns work well for a suprise.they dont over penetrate...paint ball guns will leave a mark as well and give you a new paint job in your house....two birds with one shot.

A shot gun is within my reach and safe in my house. I think its a tradition here in the south. When I got my first house, my dad said, "here boy yous a shotgun."
