That's crap! Well, you could say that number 8 is almost the same thing. Only you give the person instructions on how to stop the bleeding after they just used their hand to clean out the tines of their snowblower, while it was running! I read somewhere the being a 911 Dispatcher was the most stressful job out of 12 industries. I will try and find that.

THAT POST WAS PROBABLY WRITTEN BY A TEACHER, JUST TO CLEAR UP ANY CONFUSION. A LIBERAL TEACHER WHO IS PROBABLY ANTI-MILITARY AND DOESN'T KNOW WHAT A DISPATCHER IS. THEY SHOULD ASK POLICE OFFICERS WHAT THE MOST STRESSFUL JOBS ARE, BECAUSE WE DEAL WITH THE PUBLIC MORE THAN ANYONE. ANY LEGITIMATE SURVEY WOULD HAVE INCLUDED DISPATCHER AND DENTIST ( THEY HAVE A HIGH SUICIDE RATE ) AND MORTICIAN OR FUNERAL DIRECTOR. ALL HAVE HIGH SUICIDE RATES AND DIVORCE RATES, UNFORTUNATELY. ALSO I HAVE BEEN A POLICE OFFICER, CORRECTIONAL OFFICER, DEPUTY SHERIFF AND I WAS A POLICE CADET / DISPATCHER. DISPATCHING WAS MORE STRESSFUL THAN ANY OF THE OTHERS. CORRECTIONS WAS NEXT, THEN ROAD DUTY. THATS AN HONEST ASSESSMENT.

I completely agree....But, I was wondering, if a Mortician commits suicide do they get a discount on the funeral? WOW, that was bad.

I would have to agree, when I was in dispatch the call taking from the children was the worst. It is a toss up though, between hearing them and not being able to be there to help them and the actual being there as the little ones grieved and knowing that what you say still isnt comforting enough. I would have to say that Public Safety in general (including communications) should be in the top two with the military.

This is because 911 isn't taken into consideration as a "profession". Whoever puts together these studies gather information on many, many jobs. Since there are no studies on 911 Telecommunicators, there is no way to say why we have a very stressful job. Sad but true.

I was a Military Air Traffic Controller for 13 years before I retired. I think dispatching is the hardest thing I've done and I"ve only done it as a temp substitute. I REALLY don't wanna do it full time. Thankfully, we're short on street cops so I don't think it's an issue. (hope you get that!)

Maybe we should make our own Top Ten Stressfull Jobs list and put ourselves in the top 3! Then post it and see what people have to say ..

Well, I'd like to invite whoever compiled that list to feel free to grab a headset.... sit in the hotseat and take some 911 calls and dispatch for even half a shift... and see where they rank our job in terms of stress, lol.

You may know where you are and what you're doing...
God may know where you are and what you're doing...
But if your dispatcher doesn't know where you are and what you are doing, then I hope you and God are on very good terms!!

I agree with you! Dispatching is a highly stressful occupation and when the crap hits the fan move that stress up a few steps.

Being a dispatcher is very stressful. No only do you have to deal with people on the phone you have to make sure the personnel that you are dispatching are safe at all times. And when the shit hits the fan you are busier than a one leg man in an ass kicking contest!

FutureLEO, I lost all respect I had for you. I know from my experience in dispatching that it is highly stressful when everything goes down. It is just aas important as the street. wrong info or no info from the dispatchers will lead to disaster on the street. PERIOD. back off and be sensible. I have worked both sides and may have some knowledge about it as do several of the other dispatchers or former dispatchers posting here.....

that can be fun if you know how to deal with the teenage s**t-for-brains she brings home (yes, I am one).. LOL... but I fear every father I meet, because they are crazy..

I want to find the driver(s) at the front of the traffic jam and have their license(s) revoked. Then make them ride the bus until they promise never to hold the rest of us up again.

I just love wearing my shoulder holster with my Glock 45 whenever her boyfriend comes over. Sort of sends a subliminal message! ;)

WELL HONESTLY FOR ME... I'VE ONLY BEEN DISPATCHING FOR LIKE 11 MONTHS OR SO... BUT I DONT FEEL THAT IT'S THAT STRESSFUL SO I'D AGREE WITHT EH TOP 10 LIST AND DISPATCHING "NOT" BEING ON THERE! I MEAN YOUR LIFE IS SAFE INSIDE A BUILDING AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE THAT ARE OUT THERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WORLD THERE LIFE IS NOT THAT SAFE. THAT TO ME IS A BIG STRESS FACTOR.

I think that it's not so much our safety that makes it stressful or not stressful; to me it's the process of taking a 911 call from a HUGE emergency, and talking the person down and into telling you what the problem is. It goes from being a disaster, to a smaller issue that can be handled. Dispatchers have to calm the person down, and help them get help. While our lives may not be in direct danger, the responsibility of caring for those whose lives ARE in danger is quite stressful. I think we should be in the top 5 for SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!

What exactly do you dispatch? Or are you still in training? Because when you have a million and one things going on the radio and you have a 911 call it gets a bit stressful! As mention above you have to calm a caller down, "breaking the threshold of hysteria." That is very stressful!!!!
