The backstabbing got so bad at my facility that I had no choice but to leave. Between the backstabbing and dirty looks that could kill its amazing that I have survived this long.

aschohr..........Let me guess. Did the backstabbing and dirty looks have something to do with you being white & being female?

Umm no Ashley, I'm not kidding. Where I work most of the corrections officers are black males & females. They treat their white co-workers like garbage. They also treat police officers who are lodging their prisoners like garbage. It's called racism and they have an extremely large chip on their shoulder for some reason. You may not want to believe it, but it's sad and very true. Sorry to burst your bubble.

NYPD, how did you guess? That and this area goes by what you look like not by what you actually are. A good example is my husband...being 1/16th Native American he has that permanent tan thing going on, so in this area he is considered Hispanic. There was no bubble to burst, it was just upsetting to see that the 'good ol boy' system is still alive and well. My last job had more females and we were still treated worse than the males but this place topped that perverbial cake.

We have some. That damn rumor mill is pissing me off but I can not find the shut off switch. Mostly happens when someone sees the opportunity for either promotion (how little they know) or to "kiss up" to the supervisor. (how little they know)

EVERY department ALWAYS has drama! Daytime soaps ain't got nothing on your local police or sheriff's department!! Anytime there are men & women working together the rumors are going to fly! I learned very quickly to let things roll off my back. After all, YOU know what the truth is!

I couldn't agree more. Affairs, divorce, rumors, ect....it's better than any soap or movie any day of the week. Sickening sometimes, but you have to learn to keep your nose clean and stick to what you believe is right.

This has actually been a 'hot topic' for the past couple of months within our department ~over the past decade I've heard it...seen it...fought it~you would think people would just learn to escape their misery but apparently that is not the case. You can arrive to work and before you have your car door shut it starts ~ I have never understood the whole concept in the first place ~ I don't get involved until it involves myself, then I feel like I'm fighting a battle that I never knew existed! I know the whole phrase "there's problems everywhere" (blah blah blah) ~You would think that as close as most of us are, you wouldn't have to stress over the thought of 'the nexts days drama' but there is always someone...somewhere...who is miserable and will try and try again to bring those around them down into their pit they seem to enjoy!! Its just rediculas...maybe someday it will cease...we can at least hope :) ~For now...you're right~let it roll off your back and try to consider the source.

Sometimes I wonder if boredom plays a role in this.

You know that saying about police work being hours of boredom broken up by moments of sheer terror? Those who are attracted into emergency work tend to be action type folks, with a preponderance of Type A personalities. I speculate that when these folks are subjected to boredom, some of them "stir the pot" a bit just to have some drama to occupy them!

I just wear my body armor with the trauma plate in the back.

It's like working with adult children sometimes. Jeez.

It's half way expected when you get a bunch of Alpha males and Alpha females in one spot.....I always felt that LEO's are the most Hardcore, sensitive creatures on the planet.........out on the street, it's all about business, but as soon as you get back to the PD....."Jerry, Jerry, Jerry....."

LOL, I was reading all your post and I have to say drama drama drama is every were you go regardless of where you work or your title. Secret is to keep your nose clean and just learn to not let things get to you or under your skin. I’m a crossing guard right now for our local PD and man you should hear some the crap they come up with. I remember a rumor that was running around about our chief, something about him having an affair with the Mayors wife or something. I just look at the person and said well good for him if that’s what he wants to do then so be it, that’s their problem not mine.

I'm the only female deputy in my Department so the backstabbing is usually between the guys. Although I seem to be the mother figure and they come to me to vent. I'm glad to help, but I try to butt out so I don't become involved in the actual dispute

Yep, each daprtment (or workplace) has a little drama or backstabbing - it's the nature of being human. After 12 years, I can say that everything balances out, and if there's no such thing as karma, then God has a funny sense of humor.

Attitude is everything, and if you don't let that kind of thing get to you, the un-well-do'ers tend to find other game.

There seems to be allot of rumours going around where i work, the worst of it would be the gossips that try to get you to say something, and if you do it becomes headline news faster then light. What gets them with me is i have no problem with doing what i say and saying what i think to the persons face and not there back. Yet i acknowledge this problem heck i am the only english guy working in a french prison (Quebec) me and a few of the younger agents are trying to find the rumour mill to shut it down. Also when it come to dramas and the like i really don't care who so and so is sleeping with unless it is a prisoner cause then we have a problem. Cheers all

Back stabbing must be a prerequisite to be in Law Enforcement. Especially when you get promoted quicker than your co-workers think you should. I was promoted to Sergeant 8 months after getting hired. And to make things more fun, I am the only white Sergeant on my watch. Needless to say, the others try to make me the fall guy for their mistakes. And at first the Lt was believing them instead of watching their performances. I would get assigned to the cell blocks while the other Sgts get assigned to supervise. Well after a long talk with the Lt, asking him to just let me show him what I can do instead to listening to others and he will see. Now I am getting the same assignments as my co-workers and they are not liking it because now I was recommended for promotion to Lt. Big mountain to climb but it was well worth it.

NYPD Lieutenant: Back biting may be a better way of putting it. I don't work in LE but, I work in a federal building and I think we have the same problem (try complaining about it, I have (because it led to my being assaulted) and have to choose my words in a way I hope people see what I'm saying so they won't accuse me of discriminating) that what's usually considered atypical people are the ones who are discriminated against. I work with a woman who comes from another country and calls us "fat ugly americans" and supervisors don't want (or are afraid ) to do anything about it. Also, lots of rumors go around and some mobbing (groups of people participating) involved. The local police supported me but still working to get management at work to change the problems. Because it's a federal building they said they don't have to let the Police in. The police told me there are ways around that and what to do if assaulted again.

You gotta love cop gossip! I've been the center of several gossip rings and backstabbing, but like my mother always says, " If they're talking about me then they're leaving someone else alone." I'm just glad to know they think enough of me to talk about me! I have also found that some men are 10X's worse than a lot of women! Sorry guys, but some really are! Oh well, I love all my guys!

True. You can ask everyone I work with and I know of at least 3 that would tell you I'm a flat-out bitch. The way I look at this with women - they're just jealous! Women are terrible to each other. I have just a handful of female friends because most women are stupid. Especially civilian women. (Geez, I'm probably going to get raked over the coals for this one!) But police officers in general have their own personalities. I mean, we laugh at how brains look like scrambled eggs and ketchup.
