Trooper seriously injured

Car plows into parked Highway Patrol vehicle

A Nevada Highway Patrol trooper was seriously injured when a drunken driver plowed into the rear of a marked cruiser as it sat in the emergency lane of the Las Vegas Beltway near Eastern Avenue on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Motorists on the Beltway had called 911 about 3 p.m. regarding a white Mercury Grand Marquis that was being driven dangerously, trooper Kevin Honea said. At that time, the Mercury was eastbound on the Beltway passing Tropicana Avenue.

"Witnesses described him driving 70 to 90 miles per hour and weaving in and out of lanes, including the emergency breakdown lane," Honea said.

As other troopers were trying to catch up with the Mercury, a trooper who had just finished assisting a motorist waited in the inside emergency breakdown lane near Eastern, Honea said. That trooper had heard about the Mercury on his police radio and was watching for it to come by.

Instead of passing the trooper, however, the Mercury slammed into the back of the Highway Patrol car. There was no evidence, such as skid marks, to indicate that the driver of the Mercury tried to brake before the crash, Honea said.

The injured trooper was taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries, Honea said. The trooper, whose name was withheld by the Highway Patrol, has been with the agency for less than five years, Honea said.

The driver of the Mercury was not injured. He failed a field sobriety test and was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of drunken driving, Honea said. The driver's name was not immediately released.

Sweetpea, I'm sorry to hear that your dad was killed by a drunk driver. I have no tolerance for drunk drivers either. Hopefully this trooper will be ok. There's just been so many injuries and deaths this year that I think we need to do more praying more often. God bless those who serve on our behalf. We are grateful to you.

Was there the day this Trooper was involved in this accident and it was one of the most intense feelings ever. The dispatcher on the desk did a fantastic job (He is a former deputy) and knew what steps to take to get the officer help. He will be okay and since I have been out of the office, unknown what his status is but I will post an update as soon as I get back and find out.

Thank God he wasn't injured more seriously.

I want everyone in enforcement who reads this post to think about what was said here the next time you consider letting a drunk slide. I have never understood the reluctance by many in the field to aggressively pursue DUI offenders. If there is one arrest you can make that can seriously impact the safety of truly innocent people, a drunken driver is the arrest. If there is one person who can be stopped that has the potential to destroy your family...to kill your wife, to kill your children...it is the drunken driver.

Over 16,000 people are killed annually in this country at the hands fo DUI offenders in traffic collisions, yet the politicians scream about global warming, gas prices, and troop deaths in Iraq. To date, after approximately 5 years in Iraq we have lost 3,774 soldiers. In the same time we have lost approximately 80,000 Americans on our roadways at home to DUI related fatality collisions. Think about that the next time you think its to much paperwork.
