What happened to my beloved Police Link? As many of you who know me, a Plank Owner, I have posted very little in the past few months. The reason why? All I see as of later are posts that are not in English, the language of the Internet, or have nothing to do with police such as talking about not just football but about music bands and other things that are not even remotely applicable to Police! Even that which does actually appy to Law Enforcement is mostly about how corrupt, brutal, dishonest, and lacking total compassion Police Officers are! What happened to my PoliceLink? Where did it go? Where have so many of my good friends who are or were LEO's or associated with them or their supporter go? I suspect that many of them like me still have PL come up when they log onto the Internet but they simply do not see anything they wish to reply to or even post as nobody replies to it unless someone happens to log on right after it is posted and we see it. Come on guys, WHAT HAPPENED TO MY BELOVED POLICE lINK? I know The Sarge is doing the best he can but he is only one guy. Suggestions?

PC police. Too many people having their feelings hurt. No need for us to be banned for a perceived slight to someone who has no idea what they are talking about.

Too many civilians giving police advice.

No doubt those are valid gripes, but I do not believe those are responsible for the site's current lack of activity. The site lost most when the Monster transition happened (because of all the technical bruhaha regarding forcing everyone to register for Monster and then some more when they laid off everyone taking care of the backend. Compounding that is all the alternative ways LEOs can communicate (other sites, Facebook (yes, I realize it has its problems, but it's still used a lot), etcetera), and then maybe a few left for other reasons.

What happened to our Policelink?  A near absence of qualified LEOs who will take the time and energy to start and maintain ANY topic of interest.  The gap is being filled by non-law enforcement topics that survive out of a genuine interest in socializing with civilians. Big deal.

The claim that civilians are 'offering police advice' is pure fiction, apart from social observations, there is none.

Don't like the dwindling membership?  Quit griping and publish.

Look up for my point being made. That is the reason nobody wants to post in here. Nobody is crying about dwindling membership or anything like that. We are tired of stupid retorts to valid questions asked by verified members.

Tks AJ, you are correct that I said nothing about membership. Yes I have seen non-LEO's try to give advice about a LE matter and so have you, just maybe you are turning a blind eye to it. Legit questions and remarks are often hijacked by people acting like little kids on a social website instead of either answering the question if you KNOW the answer ot referring them to the proper person or place to locate that information. The membership numbers are in total are fine, it is the percentage of LEO's that are here anymore after throwing up their hands and leaving. Again, The Sarge is only one man who has other responsibilities other than PL so if you really care then help him out by acting like adults and pozsting good articles. I also have many other responsibilities so cannot devote much time to PL but with the posts being made it causes me to lose even more interest.

Let's not quibble over gaffes. I think we're all intelligent enough to realize that MarlyB meant participation, not membership--just as I did when I said "activity".

If you're unhappy with the quantity of quality LEO-relevant content then step up and contribute (such as I've seen Strykerbrig21 do repeatedly). It seems rather odd to say "I don't want to be here because X, but I'm too busy/important/holier-than-thou to lift a finger to fix it, so I'm going to brow-beat others about it."

Robocop and ajsdaddy, you have always been lively PL contributors.  With your wealth of experience it should be easy to come up with some engaging Forum topics in General Discussions that will draw responses from LEOs so inclined.

To clarify, PL membership may not have dwindled, but active participation surely has.  For a long time, a core of female LEOs kept things lively.

So...YOUR turn, Gentlemen!

Otherwise, don't indict civilians for sticking to 'social interaction' - which doesn't pretend to authority.  Because without civilian input...might not see any PL Forum topics at all. Might surprise some LEOs here to learn that some of us civilians have been  utterly bored with having to carry the ball just to keep PL afloat.  Has it occured to anyone that loyalty is the principle motivation?

Thanks mz66! I try to do what I can to start something in the forums and it usually gets a ton of views but maybe 5 responses. Reply so we can all learn from each other.

This is an excellent topic and I agree with Robocop, AJ, Uncledennis, and especially MZ66. Things have changed, frineds have left, and non-LEOs are just not picking up the slack for the LEOs that are no longer here. I know my own involvement has declined and I was attributing it to my retirement from the PD. But now I have to wonder if some of the observations described here have been part of it. Anyway, I'll try to get more involved. I owe it to all my PL friends. It also drives me nuts whenever I try to copy and paste things here the red screen of death has a lot to do with me just bailing on a discussion.

BTW, the Sarge has been doing an outstanding job and the mods, as always, are top notch. But, I miss the old fight club...just sayin'.

Tks for the support AJ, Dennis, BigNTS. Glad I am not the only one that sees this. As for some of the other replies, hey, don't shoot the messenger. Also do not suppose to know ALL the reason why we have not posted more ourselves. Maybe it is not a sense of being "Holier than thou" but because we have other things in our lives that are more important, such as our health etc. Privately I am aware of things going on in other LEOs lives that slow them down from posting and conversly some are aware of those things going on in my life. Just because I do not choose to share my personal issues with others does not mean I think I am better than them, it is because I do not wish to sound like I am looking for sympathy or pray the poor pitiful me card. That just isn't me nor is it my friends are. Cops are private about themselves unless we are talking among ourselves only. We do not provide personal information publically.  Like I said, if that is what you want them maybe you are better off on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter etc.

I have to agree with BigNTS and others, Sarge is doing a thankless job and doing it exceptionally. Why, because he is a better man than I.

Most of the old folks turned into lurkers because this place has turned into another place where we (police) cannot relax. I find a few (very few) topics that are interesting but the vast majority make this place feel like a facebook knockoff. My opinion.

Start more topics in the LEO-only areas and then relax. Is this not why the LEO-only areas were created in the first place?

I believe that the troll has had the most effect on participation for fear of the little POS running back and telling tales. The LEO only side is not that safe either because some have the little star that shouldn't but because in the old days some decided that they should have it, they got it.

It is much safer on that side to let you guard down a little and certainly much safer than out here in the open.

Oh, alright--I'll succumb to the general foul bellyaching mood, too.

Gosh--it's hopeless. The best topic in months is this one about how sad it is and how it used to be better. Actually, things are looking up--obviously. If we didn't have anything to complain about we'd be truly lost.

Fist bump everybody who is as miserable as I am!

P.S. Cheer up! I did you a favor. Now you have something else to complain about: the resident troll mocking you.

As Marly and mz have said, we all just need more participation. I too have been guilty of this. Work, and other obligations have cut my time online.

We all just need to be thinking a little more during the time that we do come on PL, and start some meaningful discussions.

I agree with everyone except BigNTS and JimRoc.  lol

It's discouraging to know that others presume regular contributors have 'extra time' on their hands.  I sacrifice time to contribute to PL. Years of it.  Why?  Because I believed in the site.  Believed - past tense.

LEOs time is not more valuable than anyone else's.  Nobody's cornered the market on health problems, parenting, double shifts, new jobs, training and retirement issues. This is your site.   Don't like the content?  Pull your weight.

Quite whining and publish.  That goes for the mods too.  That is, unless you are too shy.

Meanwhile, surf's up.  I have more important things to do!

OOOPS! I should've excluded MarlyB from my comments about non-LEOs. She's been very active and actually more on point than some of the LEOs on this site. She's also one of the few members here who will keep the rest of us honest...sort of like the den mother!

By the way--this is not a police topic either. This is another game topic. The rules are simple. Add a response that is more hopeless than the last. Moan about all the shortcomings and offer no solutions. Notice that some of us are not playing.

I am retired and not looking for a cop job.  That is why I am puzzled by the Monster. com connection.  The rest of the things you guys talk about was before my time so I can not comment on them but for the long time guys they have a valid point.  This word and three word stuff, makes no sense but if you guys like it, that's cool.  I like videos, stories, real cop stuff.  To be honest not into Line of death stories, I get that elsewhere.

Once upon a time, PoliceLink was not part of Monster. The people who created PL also created several other occupation-specific communities (mostly first responder--police, firefighter, nurse).  Monster bought the company and integrated it into site, calling the whole package "Monster Communities". The transition brought lots of change, and a great number of people had a problem with the requirements for transitioning to the new site: namely that they had to register at Monster. We lost a great many active members during that transition. At about the same time, the recession was coming into full swing and Monster laid off most of the staff that maintained the site--which brought more problems. The solutions their skeleton staff came up with to address spam/malware made the site even less desirable--so more people left. After that, the remaining activity was unsatisfactory to another segment of the membership, so they left. All this compounded in a vicious cycle to reach where we are today: tumbleweeds.
