Personally I prefer nights. Head doesn't work right during the day. Night is when all the good stuff happens PLUS it is cooler out.

I guess there are alot of factors which would effect how one deals with working mids.

are you a one man unit or do you have a partner? yeah four legged ones count.

Are you an active officer? By that, i mean are you looking for arrest and summons activity?

What type of environment do you patrol in? Big city, small town, very rural area, does your patrol area straddle a major transport route or interstate?

Do you plan on studying for the Lieutenants test?

I worked mids in Bed-Stuy NYC in the 70's and loved it. Lots of collars for dollars, night differential, very active cops to work with.  On mids, people are either going somewhere, coming from somewhere, or up to no good. And response times are faster with less traffic. JMHO

Um, Lulu can't have snacks, oops, I mean anyone (two or four legged) in a 20 foot radius otherwise it's a snack or dinner.

Sping, summer and fall, I enjoy working graveyard shift. Much cooler temperature wise. Don't much care for working graveyards during the winter, regardless of how biref it is here in my hometown. Nothing beats leaning against the bed of a pickup truck at 3 a.m. talking to your partner and being able to hear barking dogs and an occassional train passing half a mile away.

No partner. all our units are one man cars, I'm the Sgt. in charge of 9 counties in rural area. I end up answering calls too because I only have at best 7 or 8 Troopers for the 9 county area. Ended up with an 18.5 hr day last night. Didn't get home till 8:30am, supposed to be off at 6am. I'm gonna be a little crabby tonight. No Lt test in my future, Sgt is the hardest job in any department I think, you catch it from the top and bottom. But as Sgt I get the best of both worlds, supervision (controlling chaos) and I still get to be active in patrol.

Sounds like LuLu be going CooCoo................lol.............just kiddin'..........been there - done that. Supervising 8-16 Officers over a 12.5 hour shift. They got to go home on time in most cases - My day ran long finishing it all up. Played that game for over ten years - but - things are different now. Still on nights, but now I get to go home on time. I feel for you brother.

I've worked 3rd shift most of my professional life. Cooler temps, less traffic, etc. Best part of all, though ?? Far less politics !! A big plus there !!

Loved mids.Twenty one of my twenty seven years were spent there.Day shift was simply running from report call to report call.A six month old chimpanzee could be trained to fill in boxes.1430-2230 was where new command officers and the rookies worked-----Wheeee  !!

I agree.  I did my share of mids, and it does get old.  You tend to lose touch with the day world, and it's hard on family life. Your first day off is a waste, because you are trying to adapt to the sun being up.  I use to get real moody on days off, because of the routine.  Hated mids.

Don't forget the sprinkles...........they are good for your wrinkles - and the glaze helps moisturize that gator hide of yours.

I didn't mind working swing shifts. The 'boneyard' was exceedingly tough.

He has a gator cape...........just flies around and looks cool - really does no supervision - just bullies the baby gators and steals their lunch.
