We do worry –and rightfully so- about Global Warming.

We don worry, at least for what I see in U.S. Population- about Global Overweight....

About some talk on Global Overweight…?

My take on it is that:

1. The U.S. is leading the way on Overweight.

2. As a consequence, we are also becoming the leading Country in the so called “Syndrome X” which will inevitably turn into Type 2 Diabetes with all its undesirable results.

3. This trend will push the cost of Health Care beyond our economic capabilities, and it’s bound to be a social disaster.

4. Meanwhile, the Food Industry keeps lobbying Congress into allowing MORE, and MORE Sugar, MORE and MORE Refined products, and MORE and MORE harmful calories into our daily diet, citing “Scientific Studies” that “show” Sugar is not really that bad… MMMM

5. Makes me remember when the Tobacco Industry did everything it could using “Scientific Studies” to try to prove that Cigarettes were not really causing cancer…

Yup. I would say this is accurate. We definitely are a nation with a sense of nutritional backwardness.

There is a flicker of hope however. More and more people are turning to better eating and more physical movement. I have promoted all along that it isn't the particular activity you do but that you are active. Move more, eat less. Pretty simple. And pretty hard, too.

And cops are especially susceptible to this problem with shift work, long hours and too-too convenient not healthy eateries.

Big bump to Frank.Visit your local WalMart or just walk down the street .Some of these chicks I see could have a starting position on any team in the N.F.L. as an offensive guard or center.Perchance even sumo wrestling.

The magnitude of the Overweight problem in the US is better understood when we look a problem that never existed decades ago: Type 2 Diabetes in CHILDREN.

When I was a kid, the only kids I ever knew with Diabetes were those BORN WITH IT. In other words, Type 1 Diabetes. While this is still Diabetes, it is caused by a totally different condition. Individuals born with a Pancreas unable to control blood sugar due to immune system destruction of beta cells. I remember a school mate with that condition.

Type 2 Diabetes was always a disease onset for the elderly, or at least the late portion of the middle age.

Now, the Medical Establishment is worried about the recent and often onset of this disease in children. In fact, a recent study in NYC shows how closely related this condition is with the diet of the young today.

Not to bring up the much disputed Global Warming debate here, but doesn't Global Overweight coincide with Global Warming?

When crops are destroyed from droughts, the price of Hollistic, Organtic, Glueten Free, and of course Veggies sky-rocket.

When prices sky-rocket, folks bypass the 'health food' section and grab food that is a molecule away from being considered cement.

When people eat unhealthy, they become unhealthy both Mentally and Physically, and this only expedites future Health Problem$.

As for sustaining a daily regimine of exersize, does more sex count as an option ?? Just axe-ing

I can remember when food companies wanted to charge more for their products but to help us feel like we were not being cheated they started making the products bigger.  And so we started getting bigger as well.   As a hostess in a restaurant I am amased at the amount of food people shovel in their mouths.   They are so big they can't hardly walk.

Now on a side note to this healthy living Social Security sent me a survey wanting to determine "if your health plan is keeping you as healthy as possible".  And in two years they will send another survey " to see how well your health plan can maintain or improve health and well-being over time".   So seems like they think my health plan is responsible for keeping me healthy.   I thought I was the one doing that.

Good post Lana.

Now, let's dig just a little deeper, without going off track, like you said:

Some have raised the following argument:

1. OK, there is Global Warming, fine.

2. Well, by all accepted consensus, Global Warming will raise the levels of CO2.

3. But, CO2 is used by plants in photosynthesis to grow and to produce Oxygen.

4. So, Global Warming MAY be actually good, since plants will grow stronger and will produce more Oxygen, so, there will be more food supply and the Ozone Layer may replenish itself faster...

MMM... Well, not so.

Yes, Plants will grow taller and/or bigger, but their content of Iron and other nutrients will be lower, while their sugar content (glucose, fructose, so on) will be higher... Get the picture?

Ozone (O3) is a molecule composed of 3 Oxygen atoms, it wouldn't be chemically generated just by the mere presence of more CO2.

The Branches of Science known as Geology and Paleontology tells us something about a long gone period (over 300 million years ago)  known as the "Carboniferous". During this period, Oxygen levels in the atmosphere reached 35%, compared to about 21% now. As a result, there where GIANT insects (image a Dragonfly 30 inches long!!!)

Also, the unstable chemical condition of the atmosphere eventually produced an Ice Age. That is one of the most puzzling and challenging concepts... How could Global Warming lead to an Ice Age...? Well, it could, by all scientific means.

Great topic, Brooklyn!

BTW Global warming is a nightmare being dismissed by hopeless naiives, ostrichers and political ax-grinders.

As for Diabetes II...It is becoming epidemic in this nation.  No trendy diet, Diabetes II is a potentially lethal metabolic disease.

Uncontrolled, Diabetes II is a killer that attacks your:

1. VASCULAR SYSTEM

2.  NEUROLOGICAL SYSTEM

3.  ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

4.  SKELETO-MUSCULAR SYSTEM AND MAJOR ORGANS.

What's at stake?  Your eyes, your kidneys and your fingers and toes, to start.    It's usually complicated by high blood pressure or high cholesterol or both.  Doctors call it the Diabetes Triangle.

BE AWARE that doctors consider a Diabetes II diagnosis to be the equivalent of A FIRST HEART ATTACK for its huge impact on your body.

This is how it happens...

1.  You get warned by your md you are 'pre-diabetic'.

2.  IF you don't cut the carbs and follow all orders...BAM!  Your system goes into the 'metabolic cascade.'

3.  You now have a broken metabolism to contend with for the rest of your life.  NOTHING fixes Diabetes II.  NOTHING reverses it.  There's NO cure.

NO cure on the horizon.  Diabetes I has hope for a cure, maybe in the near future.  NOT Diabetes II.

You have to monitor your blood sugar levels.  Too low and you can get a stroke and wind up down a nursing home corridor.  Too high, your eyes are at stake.

You will be placed on an austere carb intake diet and have to re-learn how to eat.  Takes about a year to figure out how.

Typical carb intake for a female adult is 35 grams per meal.  Read some package labels next time you go to the grocery store to get an idea of what kind of cut-back you'll have to make if you ignore your doctor's orders.

Look at it this way...you'll NEVER be able to drink a glass of fresh-squeezed OJ again without feeling horrible later.  1/4 cup is your limit.  Remember lactose?  Milk becomes a rescue food.   An ice-cream cone?  Fergoot it.  Sugarless.  And YES BEER HAS CARBS.
Soooo...Take heed.  By the time you 'get symptoms' it is too late.  Stay on top of this one, my friends!

So what happens...how Diabetes II works and feels.

You are cramming down carbs all day and gaining weight like crazy.  You are exhausted and tired and horsewhipping yourself for over-eating, but that's because your body is starving because it can't properly metabolize the glucose to keep you healthy.  Instead, the circulating glucose is hanging around damaging your body right and left.

Your pancreas is getting more and more taxed and gets ready to 'give up the ghost.'

THE ROLE OF EMOTIONAL STRESS IN YOUR LIFE IS PARAMOUNT

We should all live forever in the utopia of being "in shape" and without greenhouse gasses and cow flatulence. I never knew living as a free American offended so many people. Silly me.

In about 5 Billion years the Sun will die.

Our beloved Planet Earth will die long before that, when the Sun becomes a Red Giant...

The Human Species would probably be extinct long before the Earth dies, as a result of the Sun's expansion into a Red Giant...

In nature nothing last forever. Everything will eventually die, EVEN the Sun, Starts, and the Universe itself...

So, the idea is not to live forever, rather, it's to live a QUALITY LIFE.

Whatever my years would be, whatever I still have ahead of me, I want to make the BEST OF IT.

I mean, I do not want to live the last 10, 15, or 20 years going into a Hospital for dialysis or riding a wheelchair, if I can help it...

It NOT about living forever, it is about living a quality life, whatever the length of it.

I agree.  It doesn't serve us or our children to buy into stubborn and greedy, nihilistic clap-trap in order to avoid responsible behavior.

Now.

There no greater stupidity than ignorance sounding the charge for cowardice.
