I am 19 1/2 and will be applying to the State Patrol in September. For WSP that is the minimum age to apply. I have been a ranking member in a local Explorers Post. I have a assosicates degree that leans to communication, but have teaken with very high marks Law and Justice courses. I have held three jobs and many of them in leadership positions. I am CPR trained and Certified and one of my jobs was as a first responder using those skills. My nose is squeaky clean and I have good established credit. I have recomendations from the Cheif of Police and officers from my local department and can pass the physical tests without a problem. I have a real passion for law enforcment. Are there any other tips you could give me to strengthen my application, resume, or anything in general?

Sounds like you got it good!! I was a deputy in WA State for a brief time. As long as your background, medical, polygraph, references, and physical agility all come back good, I'd say your to go!! Good Luck!

All you need to do now is score well on the tests.  The rest is out of your hands.

shoffmanssd, welcome to PL from So Cal.

Like others have mentioned, sounds like you have everything in order.  That said, my greatest advice comes in the form of a statement.  Keep in mind that NOTHING in this business is a guarantee that you have the job in the bag and that NOTHING is final until it's final.  You mentioned that the minimum age requirement is 19 years of age.  California actually has a minimum age of 18.  That said, I have NEVER seen anyone get hired until 20 years of age with the candidate turning 21 before graduation from the academy.  You may find yourself in a similar predicament.  If so, don't get your shorts in a bunch or otherwise discouraged.   Consider the fact that while you have kept yourself focused on your education (smart) and you have kept yourself "squeaky clean" (even smarter), you are only 19 years of age and you will be competing with candidates that are:

1) 21 years old already

2) will be 21 years before graduating from the academy

3) have actual "life experience" in the real world by either living away from home, service in the military and or otherwise supporting their own family

All that in addition to what you have already accomplised in your short 19 years.

Apply anyway.  The experience you will have along the way is an education all on its own.  You will see first hand how the hiring process works.  You'll have the experience of taking the written and physical agility tests, being interviewed by an oral interview panel and if you're really lucky, going through the background investigation.  You'll have the opportunity to learn from the (hurry up and wait) process and see where you may still need to tweak your knowledge and hone your interview skills while you continue to obtain your life experience.

Good luck to you.
