I am currently serving on AD in the Coast Guard. I am looking at getting out next year and applying for jobs in LE community. This February I plead guilty to Simple Assault and Public Drunkenness at a Summary Court Martial. I was out with some friends from my cutter and drank too much and slapped a shipmate's wife on the butt. I immediately apologized and she accepted. This type of incident could not have come at a worse time due to the atmosphere in the military. I was initially charged with a sexual assault but the government dropped it to assault on their own volition. They then ask for a plea deal which is how we got to the summary. A summary court martial has no civilian equivalent and is something the military created. It is an administrative procedure just above non-judicial punishment. I have not been arrested and this does not count as a federal conviction of any kind. Aside from some speeding tickets, this is my one hiccup. I have a BS in Criminology and Political Science and am working on a MA in Homeland Security. I am also a qualified Boarding Officer and a graduate of the Maritime Law Enforcement Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Do you think that I will still be able to get a job as a LEO? Thank you

Being that you report an immediate apology that was accepted by your shippie's wife, how was it that the incident came to the attention of your superiors? Also, how old are you?

That will be up to the agency where you apply. Since you committed the act  the fact you apologized immediately will have no bearing. Why not axe the agency where you apply. Departments have different standards. Personally,I think you will be fine.

She yelled and had a big argument with her husband because he did not do or say anything to me at the time. He reported the incident three weeks later after sexual assault training for the unit. I am 25.

I have asked the agencies to which I am interested in applying. I just wanted to get the opinion of the people on this site.

Thank you both for responding

What did the agencies say when you axed. I am kind of curious.

uncledennis1-Most said it wouldnt be a big deal depending on other factors. I would have to get by the background investigation and I talked to them today and they said it shouldnt be a problem.

I'd say it depends on the agency. An incident like that may not fair too well, meaning it may show a lack of self control. Just speculating though. Do you think they will give you an honorable discharge? If someone else applies without baggage and its between you and that other person, you may have a tough time.

mmm It will definitely depend upo n the agency - I know when I applied years ago (23) the applicationasked  if you had been convicted  Court Martial  -- my question why this even went that far - Captain's Mast (Army it was called an Article 15)....

Is there more to the story????

Good evening Chad and a belated welcome to Police Link.I concur with Uncldennis' first statement ,I don't believe it's a big deal. Not proud of it,,but I and sixteen of my buddies got an article 15 while in basic,in the same platoon. We simply went off base and got tanked and were confined to the company compound for a week.Guess it was acceptable, latter on,as I was a leo for twenty seven years. We all make blunders.Just try to keep it error free henceforth.
