So i recently got pulled over in Prince Georges county MD and the police officer gave me 2 tickets . One for exceeding the maxamium speed doing 88 in a 55 and then another ticket for driving the in excess of reasonable and prudent speed on highway . I have had a ticket before then that i recieved in charles county md for speeding where i was going 54 in a 45. I am 21 with no record these tickets are the only thing i have. I am in the background process with 2 local police agiencies and i have inforemed them both about the recent tickets i just recieved. I just want to know how bad will this hurt my chances of getting hired .

Dear Leed21,

I too have a lead foot.  And a good German engine.  Annnd...the need for speed.  So, I am inclined to be a risk-taker - someone 'imprudent and negligent.'  The law wants to make sure I correct that tendency. That's done by making me pay through the nose.

Sooo...with negligent driving on my record, why then would the law want to hire me as a State's witness sworn into the public trust??

I would be up against many fine candidates who have not shown recklessness and a disregard for the law in their driving habits.  Remember that the highest cause of untimely death among our police officers is due to automobile accidents.  Departments look for smart drivers!

Not saying you will never get a shot at it, but guessing you have to wait sufficent time to show a clear record.

In the meantime, think of your fellow drivers and what's at stake.  Also, use an upper-case 'I' when referring to yourself.  It shows maturity and responsibility.  Even if you sometimes lack it.  Like ME!

Your Fellow Driver,

Jane Q. Public

As A LEO you have to show maturity and common sense. Going that fast for no reason is not only unsafe for you but other drivers as well. You do not have red and blue lights on your car yet and if and when you do are you going to drive like that or faster just because YOU can. No you should not except when it is safe to do so and you do not put yourself or others at risk. Use your head and drive safe and slow!!!!

Let go and let GOD,
Only HE can control everything.

Wow dude,88 in a 55 is not just speeding it is definitely immature as all my friends have indicated.Even if you do ever earn a badge and are operating in an "Expedite" mode, you had better have a mighty good reason for doing so.

The speeding tickets won't hurt your chances as much as your spelling and grammer skills, or lack thereof, may.

88 in a 55 here is likely to land you in jail. The Officer cut you a break.

No jail here, but a mandatory appearance before the traffic magistrate.

Uh, no.

Bad. Very bad.

Why would I hire you to drive a police car when you can't control your own car?

Think about it.

And oh, I might as well pull up alongside MarlyB.

Not only with that lead foot (and like with Lulu said, you got lucky because it's automatic court date with 30mph and up), but you also have to remember that most departments a set amount of tickets you can have in a certain amount of time; not to say they expect people to test those limitations.  Plus, though the violations may not be a disqualifier, you do have to remember you will be applying against those with less to no violations their entire driving career.

Just curious why you would get two (2) separate tickets for what essentially amounts to the same offense...... SPEEDING.  Seems kind of odd unless that's how it's done in MD.  It also seems to me that one citation for one of the violations of speeding would have been sufficient.  Two separate citations for speeding is not only a waste of paper but also seems to be bordering on double jeopardy with one of the violations (basic speed law - driving faster than the posted speed limit, or prima facie speed law - driving at a speed in excess of what is deemed reasonable) being lesser included offenses to the other and more serious, driving in excess of 30mph over the posted speed limit.  Obviously if you are driving in excess of 30mph over the posted speed limit, it has already been determined to be unreasonable and is already over the posted speed limit.

All that said, how is it going to all relate to your chances of getting hired by an agency?  That all depends on the agency.  What I find significant about your situation as described by you is that while speeding citations may be your only downfall, they are recent and indicate that you didn't learn from the first one.  You may consider slowing down first and foremost. (HINT, HINT)  You may also consider putting some distance and time between you and these tendencies for having the lead foot.  There are speedometers in vehicles for a reason and the newer digital ones are fairly accurate.  Is there really a valid excuse?  Probably not.  So slow down.

I was thinking the same thing. Why two tickets? Almost could generate a double jeopardy situation.

Unless, as you mentioned, it's how they do it in MD.

If this stops you from employment re-apply in 6 mos or apply somewhere else. Just watch your speed.

He still wants to be an officer ,but wants Jeff Gordon or Dale Earnhardt to be his F.T.O. I would rather have Danica Patrick.

I don't believe that they gave him those two tickets, I have loaded up some when absolutely necessary (when they were being a POS) but never the same type charge. Of course things may have changed since I was there but I doubt it.
