 Hello!

My name is Joseph, I'm 24 years old, and I currently live in New York.

My education is as follows...

I have an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice.

I have a Paralegal Studies Certification.

I will be receiving my Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement Technology in 2015.

I do not want to live in New York anymore. I am currently doing research on different states to live in and become a police officer. I look forward to reading the forums and gaining valuable information from this website.

P.S. I already took the "Would You Pass the Polce Exam" quiz and I passed with flying colors!

-Joseph

Where are the questions you have? This reads more like an introduction.

I really only have one main question. What state is good for aspiring LEO's?

I would like to live somewhere that's rather warm! Living in New York for all these years hasn't been so nice.

Welcome to PL from the midwest.  Texas seems to be hiring some LEO's, however it is a state which allows self sponsering so many departments look for people already certified.  Also TX has not been particulrly warn this winter, but for sure warmer than NY.

Montana is always looking for good Officers and so are we. we have an opening right now if anyone is interested in living in a low crime area with great hunting and fishing prospects.

First, change your avatar. It's high school-ish and pedestrian. Anyone who will do a background check on you will discover your 'look-at-me-ism' photo and dismiss you without much thought.

Now, to the question at hand. California is currently experiencing a huge spike in hirings after 5 years of budget cuts and fiscal difficulties. It is good time for Police Trainees, Police Recruits and Police Laterals. Our retirement system is hovering around 2.7@ 57 (or similar) and the pay is enough to keep you within residency requirements.

Working in California is not for the faint of heart. Some jurisdictions are tough as nails and California can be a weird place to work. And you will need to attend and complete a California academy to get a job. Possessing an undergraduate degree is excellent...as long as it is from an accredited college, whether on a college campus or by distance learning.

If you attend my academy, you will need to get by me....or you'll end up working in a non-law enforcement job for life.

That's it. You'll have to pay for the rest.

10-8....

 Thanks Sarge!

I really appreciate the feedback! My undergraduate degree will definitely be from an accredited college.

California is a place I would consider moving to and pursuing a LEO career.

Maybe I'll see you in your academy one day!

Thanks for the balance reply. Some people get their tidy-widees in a knot.

Ok, you did good. You changed your avatar. BUT, you need to change it again. Some of our LEO folks on here will take issue with you flying a department patch if you're not a LEO. Look for something patriotic maybe. Your stock is going up around here so keep up the momentum.

As far as seeing me, .... maybe. But I know most of the academy directors and coordinators in the state. I already have over 50 recruits for this year to deal with. Maybe next year

Yes, please change your avatar. You are getting way ahead of yourself. You will upset those of us that are in law enforcement. Thanks in advance.

Maybe next year for sure Sarge! I won't be ready to make the move until next year anyway.

I think I got the avatar issue fixed now. Offending anyone was not my intent whatsoever!

Thank you again for the replies I really appreciate it!

Looking for a warm place huh.?Having studied my satellite weather channel ,closly for the past two + months I would suggest either Mexico or Bermuda.Seriously I would suggest Phoenix,Az.--San Antonio,Tx.-Jacksonville,Fla. or Memphis,Tn.-I make these decisions based on parks/recreations facilities, entertainment, tax base training of officers and reputation of said Police Departments,as well as crime rates and numerous other important data I have gleaned.Much good fortune to you and I hope you make an in depth study prior to considering a move.

You should look into any states that are hiring. Don't set your sight on a couple of states and expect things to pan out because it doesn't always work out. Hope you realize the bigger the state/jurisdiction, the more competition you'll encounter hence smaller odds of being hired. Calif. is a nice state to live in but also expensive and has high unemployment rate, overcrowdedness, high crime, etc...... I lived there for over 20 years so I've been there, done that. It's highly overrated (sorry Sarge lol).

The only way I'd move back is if I win the lottery jackpot and can afford a property in Carmel, CA.

How's that HOPE and CHANGE working out for you?

Welcome to PL from Colorado.

Montana was mentioned as looking for good officers. Look into mtletc.org. It is a testing site and there are 23 departments in the state that pull from that list.

I lived in MT for a few years... sometimes wish I never left.

Thanks for all the wonderful replies everyone!

I've seen a few states mentioned that I was already looking into which makes me feel more confident in my choices!

A big consideration for me will be for my girlfriend as well. I would like to go to a state that would be beneficial for us both.

Thank you again for all the warm welcomes and advice!

Florida is actually my #1 choice to go to so far. The last time I was there I felt at home and it was an amazing experience. I also did some research on the major PD's in Orlando, Miam, Fort Lauderdale...it looks promising! Thanks for the welcoming!

Welcome to PL from Cave Creek, AZ.  You've received lots of sound advise here.  You want warm, Arizona meets that requirement.  Being retired from LE though, I haven't kept up with the various agencies recruitment needs.  I do know city of Phoenix was looking for officers and State is always looking to hire as long as you don't care what part of the state you are assigned to.  Good luck, I wish you well.

Hello again.  I know you are still in school, but for what it is worth, I just heard on the news that Mesa PD in AZ opened recruitment this morning.   If I heard them right, they are looking to hire 250 officers.  Starting salary about 50k.  Not sure how long recruitment will be open, but you or anyone else seeing this that is interested can certainly google it to find the Mesa PD site.
