PoliceLink Officer Down Remembers...

Sergeant J. Michael Phillippi
Henry County

Virginia State Police

End of Watch: Saturday, January 11, 2014

Biographical Information
Age: 65
Tour of Duty: 43 Years
Badge Number: Not Available

Incident Details
Location: Henry County
Cause: Medical Condition
Incident Date: Saturday, January 11, 2014
Weapon: Not Applicable
Suspect: Not Applicable

Sergeant J. Michael Phillippi was found unresponsive by a passer-by around 2:20 a.m., after a motorist saw his unmarked patrol car crashed northeast of Martinsville, said state police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri.

He was working the overnight supervisory shift for the Salem Division at the time of his death. A rescue crew performed emergency CPR at the scene and on the way to Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, Carpentieri said. He was was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.

An investigation Saturday showed Phillippi was eastbound on Virginia 57 (Chatham Road) in his state police Chevrolet Impala when he ran off the right side of the road and struck a highway sign. The Impala crossed back over Virginia 57, ran off the left side and struck an embankment.

The car sustained only minimal damage, “which suggests it was not going at a high rate of speed” prior to the crash, Carpentieri said. Phillippi, who was in uniform, was wearing a seat belt.

sergeant Phillippi was working the overnight supervisory shift for the state police’s Salem division on Saturday morning, officials said. Carpentieri said it was unclear where the sergeant was headed when he crashed.

He spent most of his 42 years with the state police office that encompasses Martinsville, Henry County and Patrick County. He became a Sergeant in 1990.

It was determined that Sergant Phillippi's death was caused by a medical condition, and not injuries sustained in a crash, according to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke.

Sergeant Phillippi is survived by his wife.

God comfort the family and friends of admirable Sergeant J. Michael Phillipi, whose fine service for Henry County will be long remembered.  Bless them and keep them well all their lives.

Aim at the high mark and you will hit it. No, not the first time, not the second time and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting for only practice will make you perfect. Finally you'll hit the bull's-eye of success.

Rest in peace Sgt. Phillippi. I'll keep you, your family, friends and co-workers in my thoughts and prayers.
