There is a very good chance this could effect them. they should just come forth and tell their superior Officer NCO or other wise about this indiscretion. they may forgive them.

If the step mom does not want this person in their residence then they are not allowed to enter. if they do then they can be arrested for trespass and or burglary. Buy a new shirt.

This one gave me a headache too, but I'll give it a whirl.  I was not clear if they were in the Navy at the time of the incident or are getting ready to go into the Navy in the next 30 days.  Sounds like they were in a program and active to me.

I recently had a discussion with a recruiting officer.  I was told that unless there was an active criminal investigation and charges, they could enter the military.  They would have to wait for all charges to clear and the case was closed before going into the military if there was an active case.  I am not sure how it would work if they were already active in the program at the time the incident took place.

Unless you think this could develop into a criminal filing and an arrest and/or they will report it to the person's superior officer to create trouble for your friend, I say honestly is always the best policy and to come clean.  Better their superiors hear it from your friend than to hear it from a third party and be called out on it.

Bottom line is they just need to go their separate ways, not do anything stupid in the meantime that could jeopardize their career (trespass or commit burglary in an attempt to retrieve the shirt) and just go invest in a new shirt.  Separate from each others lives for the time being and everything will probably be fine in the long run.

That all said, I was not in the Navy and cannot guarantee how they would react since this appears to have occurred while they were active and participating in a Naval program at the time of the incident.  A text on a phone could have been sent by anyone with access to that phone (although we know your friend said they sent it).

I wish them good luck on this one and to be smart going forward.

3 months ago is not "so long ago" in the grand scheme of things. Have "your friend" check with the Navy Recruiter. Spindy is probably more up to date than I am on the Military, so "your friend" shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Incidentally, proper English, Punctuation and appropriate capatalization is a wonderful thing. This is a website, not a cell phone.             (-http://voices.yahoo.com/creative-writing-sentence-structure-248135.html)

Step-Mommy Dearest would be in trouble too... People get so caught up in the "bad" they did that they cannot see the entire picture.  Tell your friend to buy a new shirt, kiss the things left at SMD's house goodbye and move on, never to look back at this lesson learned.  And don't forget to talk to her recruiter regarding this issue.  Better to come clean now then have it possibly bite her in the buttocks later.

What is a dep shirt?  Who does it belong to?  File charges for theft.

This is a two way street.  It has been two days since your original post and if the party involved has reported to duty in the last 48 hours, what did they use for a shirt if they can only have the one that was issued?  Also, a text on a cell phone is just that, a text.  Other than a cell phone comment, there is no physical evidence that she actually bought the pot - it turns into a she said/she said situation.

On the other hand, keeping the shirt and refusing to return it knowing it is a duty required shirt (and even if it wasn't), a theft has been committed.  I would have her ask nicely for the shirt explaining to them it is duty required and explain you have to call the police (or military) and file a theft report if they do not.  She needs to do this in a manner so as not to stir the pot.  Verbal calmness and niceness, no matter how much it pains her to do so, will help her prevail.

HOWEVER, I still do not understand why she cannot go into the duty store and purchase another shirt.  I am not buying the fact that she is not allowed to.  My son is in the Navy and he can purchase anything he needs.  The Navy did not give him a uniform or shirt, they gave him an allowance and it was up to him to purchase the required uniform.  I know I don't know it all, but I would think the same would apply here.
