What do y'all prefer as your long gun for duty use if not both, Shotgun or AR-15?

Yes, I'm a sheriffs deputy in Texas. This was a topic going around the station, some guys swear on one over the other. Figured id bring the poll to yall. I personally think carrying both and using whichever applies to the situation at hand.

Well,on my Dept. we carried a Shotgun on a hook on the right side of our belt and an AR15 on a hook on the left side of our belt.I usually had a MAC10 in my right hand and a Desert Eagle 50 cal. in my left.My partner,a 6'7" 349 Lb. fe. officer generally had a rocket launcher hanging out the window.

Whoa, watch yourself!  Otherwise you won't be here very long! Disrespect is not tolerated here. Your next response should be tempered with a bit of opps, ya'll took that the wrong way!

I prefer a good 'ole slingshot with steel ball bearings. Or a sharp rock.

If that was enough to get under his skin to where he leave, wonder how he handles pressure on the job?

WOW..... Missed the party.  Could have been a serious question, I guess.  May have been legitimate LE but we'll never know.  Would seem that his tighty whities got all twisted up a little on the short side of things.  All that said, as others have mentioned, it depends on the situation.  I know what turned the tide in the LAPD North Hollywood Bank of America shoot-out (02-28-97).  Two men armed with fully automatic AK47's and protected by a nearly full suit of Kevlar held a large portion of the LAPD at bay for approximately 45 minutes during a bank robbery.  At the time of the incident, the typical LAPD officer was equipped with his or her Beretta 92f or 92fs 9mm and either the Ithaca model 37 or Remington 870 12ga. loaded per policy with only .00 buck, no slug rounds.  In addition to the eventual arrival of SWAT officers, it was only after officers went to a local gun dealer, explained the exigent circumstances of the incident in progress and returned with several AR-15's, extra magazines and a supply of .223 ammo that they were able to properly engage the suspects and end the threat.  While several LAPD officers were injured, none lost their lives during the incident.  The two suspects..... DRT.  As a result of this incident, LAPD policy was modified to include the option for a larger duty weapon up to .45 cal, rifled slug rounds available for the shotgun and the availability of an AR-15 for almost every deployed unit.  Ask anyone who was on that incident and they will tell you that readily deployable AR-15's in the units may have ended the incident much sooner.

He was obviously not a confirmed leo and doubt he was ever,as he claimed. The manner in which he responded to Dennis leaves me to believe he may have completed the eighth grade.Doubt if he would be capable of composing a readable report.

SkoolCop. Thanks for pointing that out. I viewed the incident. I think and please correct me if I am wrong that one of the bad guys felt the heat and committed suicide. I was not convinced the OP was a cop and felt the need to hold his feet to the fire.

The suspect that committed suicide was hit with gunfire that severed his spinal cord at almost the same moment he capped himself.  The second suspect who engaged SWAT officers (didn't have time to completely gear up and were only wearing shorts and tac vests with helmets) went down after being hit several times in the leg and bleeding out from a major bleeder to the thigh. At the time that threat was stopped, the belief was that there were still possible suspects outstanding.  Med-aid was not able to get to the scene for him for several minutes while they were making sure there were no more active threats outstanding.  Mom of that suspect attempted to sue the LAPD and was thrown out of court.

As for the O/P..... Who knoze whut his story wuz?

Working in a very urban area and back in my time when ballistic vests were not available the shotgun was all that was required and in most cases a .38 revolver was also fine. Yes it would have been much nicer had we the option of having a hi-cap Semi-auto pistol and enough shotguns for everyone, (many times while in uniform patrol I did not have a shotgun in my vehicle), and even having a AR type rifle would have been nice but all we had on that end was our bolt action Remington 700 Sniper rifles used for Swat Officers and some old Thompson .45cal A1A's.

Now I would like a Semi-auto .45 for duty, a 9mm compact for concealed carry, a UTS-15 or Kal-Tec KSG bull-pup pump shotgun and either an AR-15 or Blackout 300 both in locking racks in my patrol unit. Having an outside ballistic vest capable of inserting ceramic plates would also be much appreciated as well. Heck I like having an armored Humvee with a mounted .50 M-1 or one of those electric Gatlen gun type weapons that spit out 3-6,000 RPM! LOL!

Many years ago (ie last century) when I worked a a deputy with my own take home car we were issued shotguns.  So rather that ask the sheriff if it was Ok, I sorta slipped my M1A rifle in the truck of my patrol car and had it available as well.

If I have the ability to take both, I would. Choosing between one or the other, I prefer the AR rifle. Each one has its own purpose in the world, but with the right ammo, I think the .223 is more versatile

Carry both in my rig but like the AR 15 for building searches due to it lighter weight and more ammo. Besides that I look really cool wearing it. LOL
