welcome to policelink brother and 1st thank you for your service to our country.  If you have  your heart on serving in the state of new jersey (and i really dont know why anyone would) lol. I can think of no greater law enforcement institution in New Jersey than the State Police. Lots of educational opportunities, varied enforcement bureau's, and a proud heritage. Had a close and dear friend who was capt in state police befor e his succoming to cancer.  Had the opportunity to meet quite a few of his felllow troopers both on and off duty.  Drop them a line and tell them you are soon to be a civilian again and would like to hear your options.  Good luck and keep us informed please.

Stay in if you can, there is nothing out here with the rush of Ranger duties.  I served 22 years and retired in 06, so every little bit of pension helps.  If you get out, get into the Reserve or Guard and complete a 20 year retirement period because a second pension will be nice to have.  Finish your college and at least get the bachelor degree because this day and age college is helpful to forge forward in any career, but the existing hours will be a benefit to getting into the biz.  Many agencies don't require a degree as yet, but it may very well come to that one day.  I can not speak to what NJ requires.

While you are waiting to get hired finish your degree or course work, try and get on an agency as a Reserve or part-time if available, as this will give you some practical experience and training that may put you slightly above another pursuing the same opening.  Thanks for your service and good luck with your pursuit.

Thanks for the advice.  Yes i plan on going into the guard after i get out.  Would i have to start as a SLEO 1 or 2 or would i be eligible to start as a patrolman if i do get hired upon completion of the academy?

Not sure what SLEO is, but if you are hired by an Agency, it should be as a Patrolman.

Thank You for Your Service!! Welcome to Police Link, from Ohio and a fellow Veteran!!
