Hello - Researching for a novel series

Hello,

I'm a civilian in New Jersey. I am writing a series of novels that involve a character who is a police officer. Because my series begins in 1988, I am trying to find an officer or officers who has/have been on the job since the 1980's and who would be willing to advise me on how to describe procedures, available technology, etc., from that time. The novels take place in a fictitious town in central Florida, so if someone has worked in Florida, that would be even more helpful.

I will (of course) include thanks in my acknowledgements, and I will do my best to keep my questions as concise as possible and will try not to take up too much of anyone's time.

Thank you!

Hmm. I see from looking around at other posts that I'm not the first to come here with this request. Someone made a great suggestion to another poster who was researching for a novel, to talk to an officer face to face. I would be willing to do that, but I wanted to see if I could start a dialog here as well. Perhaps someone who works in Florida could direct me as to the best way to contact a particular department, to inquire if there is anyone with 25+ years on the force who would be willing to talk with me (?).

Joined today. Keep in mind we are a suspicious bunch. My suggestion is put your request on ice for the next 90 to 120 days and post on the forums and give us a chance to get to know you. Then post your request. Personally I only read ANN RULE.

Yes, Maam. You are not the first. Here's what I would recommend. Not knowing where you are, I would start locally to see what equipment was available at the time and some of those local procedures. If you are not in Florida, you could do a quick internet search, find a suitable department and send a letter or an email to a Public Affairs representative. Once you make that contact, maybe they could help you out or point you in the right direction.

Best wishes.

Thank you, uncledennis1 and 36TR. I understand and I appreciate your suggestions. I'll be happy to interact here and give you guys a chance to get an idea of who I am as a person before I ask again.

I grew up in Florida and moved to New Jersey in early 2011. We'll be visiting family and friends in Florida in December. I'll reach out to a Public Affairs representative as you suggested, 36TR, and hopefully I'll have an opportunity to speak with someone while I'm there. My former boss in Florida has a brother who is a detective. I've been working on developing this character for quite a while and I did speak with my boss' brother about the character at one point, but it's been a long time. I had less of a concept of who the character was, then. Maybe I'll email him and ask if he'd mind a few questions again.
