In October of 2012 i got charged with a minor in possession of alcohol as well as fleeing the scene of an accident. in the timespan  of just a year ive straightened out my life and began persueing a career in law enforcement. im currently getting an associates degree in criminal justice and im going to follow it up with attending the police academy and hopefully become a police officer. i want to know if these charges will make it difficult for me to achieve this. by the time i finish with my associates degree it will have been about 2-3 years.

Im looking to follow in my fathers footsteps and have a loong career in law enforcement any help or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated

Wow.....I'm going to say no. Good grief. Apply if you want but like I always say, you will up against other applicants that are clean with an outstanding resume. Have a backup plan because its going to be a very long ride if you want in this job. Your legal issues are almost a kiss of death on a LEO career.

Interesting that despite having a father who is already in the career of LE, that the O/P would make such mistakes, errrrr commit such crimes that could have such grave consequences.

YES, these charges will ABSOLUTELY make your path more difficult to achieve.  As was already stated, you had better have an alternative plan in the event that LE closes its door(s) to you.  Apply if you feel you must but be ready for disappointment.  If you choose to apply, keep in mind that departments are looking for people who have demonstrated and have a history of good decission making skills over a prolonged period of time.  No matter how good you were up until then, if 2012 was not a good year for you in this reguard (and it appears based on your own statements that it wasn't), 2013 and 2014 (or longer) will not be enough time to show that positive changes made are enough to allow you to compete with applicants who had no "minor in possession" charge or "Hit and Run (Misdemeanor or Felony)" on their record.  While you may have taken responsibility for these bad choices, they were simply not responsible choices.  Throw out everything up until the year 2012.  Everything starts from there and those choices.  Bottom line, if (and that is a very BIG "IF") you have a future in law enforcement, you may have to prove yourself over the course of several years to show or otherwise demonstrate that you will not repeat the same behavior of 2012.  In this day and age, departments simply put, are not willing to take a chance on what has all the signs, symptoms and indicators of a HUGE LIABILITY and like it or not, right now and at least for the next several years, you are that HUGE LIABILITY that no one will want.

It all comes down to choices.  We all are faced with making them on a daily basis.  So remember, if you choose, you must choose wisely.

These are NOT catastrophic charges,BUT, they were recent which doesn't bode too well.

My suggestion is to put 5 years between the screw up and application. You do have a hill to climb.

Ask Dad! Apparently, you chose to come here and ask total strangers that question, instead of asking the one you aspire to be like! Go figure!!!!!

Brother these guys are not the ones to ask for advice.  Trust me there are some members here who are still feeling the effects of bad decisions they made in their career.  They wanna come to this site and act high and might though.  Ha ha ha

10/21/13 Gee chomper could you be one that was asked to leave? maybe our troll. But I doubt that you will stay very long, oh and are you speaking about the membership in general or just LEO's

I had to think about this one for a few days.

I'll talk plain here.

So I read it as you are out of high school and just into college. You partied hardy with your friends and screwed up. Bad enough that your father's influence could not save you......

You're right to think it's a mess and I figure you can't talk to your Dad because he's pissed and probally was helping pay for college too.

Actions speak louder than words here............You gotta work 3x harder just not get back to square one, but to knock this off your back.

Stop partying, Excel in every class, get First Aid Quailified, AED and CPR Training.............

You can make yourself, your father and all of us here proud.

It can be done, It won't be easy....but I can read the Future on this one and tell you that it will be worth it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now go do it and don't forget to send us a picture of your first day on job.

God willing.....We  will still be here.......... waiting to see what happens.

That's good sound advice right there!  On time and on target!
