Anyone use these? I'm talking about the swat/ riot shields. Are they helpful or needlessly cumbersome?

Never used one but I could see situations where it could come in handy.

Have used the ballistic shields when I was on the SRT team. They are kind of cumbersome and you need to be good shooting one handed, but I loved slamming people with the thing. They are, in my opinion, a great tool if used properly.

I would love to see that, much less do it!

We use them about twice a year for field-force training after that it’s back in the trunk with them.

Any type really. I have never used any sort of a shield, so I was curious as to everyones opinions and use history with them.

Our SRT Team uses the Ballistic Shield and then we have a bunch of riot shields that just lay on a shelf - don't think they've ever been used....But we had to have them!

The clear shields get used for an hour or 2 a year during in-servece, the tactical teams and ESU have several different ballistic shields they use for different applications. ESU also has a stun shield that mostly gets used for catching EDPs (now that's fun to watch)

we used them during a strike ONCE in a V formation to disperse a crowd all we found them good for was to protect the guys shooting the "knee knocker" rounds cummbersome best way I could explain them

I will take anything in front of me if I am getting shot at, but they are bulky and get heavy after a while.

I have one in my trunk. 33 pounds of instant wall that will stop a .308. I used to take it out and run laps with it at the Academy. Once you've messed around with it for a while, it's not so troublesome. It's amazing how many guys you can stack behind one on a tactical approach. With as heavy as my is, I require my guys to be on either side of me with guns downrange. If I am going to lug around this shield, I expect my guys to provide fire up in front of me. Each supervisor has a shield in their trunk.

We used one of the big steel shields once in attempt to arrest a large male mental subject who was attacking his mother's home with a hatchet. The biggest member of our squad had the shield and was spraying mace from the cut out for pistol. This guy started attacking him with the hatchet and it looked like a scene from a Crusaders movie. One of the guys finally smashed a kitchen chair over the subject's head and we were able to subdue him and take him to the the mental ward.
