Personal History Statement

So I am almost finished with the hiring process at my local Police Department. This post may sound obserd or I may just be over anxious but....I have made a couple technical errors in my Personal History Statement packet and it looks rather...sloppy... I feel a little embarrassed to go in and ask for a duplicate of the packet... Tell me, am I over reacting? or do you think that they would care less about the small errors? I have passed all of the tests and 2 interviews including an interview with the command staff, this is one of the last 3 parts of the process.

Thanks!

(In short) should I just ask for another copy?

A few of questions. . . .1). Where these "mistakes" of some importance or just little errors?  2). Could these errors be taken as intentional misleadings?  3). Have you already gone through the background process?

I think you probably need a little more information as to what types of errors you made in your background packet before anyone can begin to give you a legitimate answer here.

I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them.

I second that Beowulf. OP are you talking about typo's? Here's the deal and something I hope will sink in, your personal history statement (form F3 here in NC) had better be the same from the time you first put one in at the start of the academy, through your first or even tenth hire (save for the changes made as you move from department to department). If it is not SOMEONE up at training and standards will notice and ask about the discrepancy. T&S has no sense of humor.

You can't cure stupid.

The errors are not misleading. I worked on my packet late into the night and made some typos. For example: while listing past employment I placed 2 employers out of chronological order. I filled out the packet in pen, so there are some single line cross-outs. I put 3 phone numbers in the address portions of the siblings section. this packet is 15 pages long...Should have made a copy... When asked if I drink I checked no, single line crossed-out and checked yes with the required explination. Same thing with when asked if I expected addition source of income while employed with the department... please keep in mind that it was late, I rushed myself to get it in ASAP, and hence the errors. I DO PLAN ON TURNING IN BOTH PACKETS IF GRANTED A DUPLICATE (I just want the final copy to look neat and error free)...FYI, I DID NOT MAKE IT THIS FAR WITH DECEITFUL INTENTIONS...OBVIOUSLY.

It seems to me you have two choices:

1) go in and ask for the form back so that you can make some corrections. You can explain the whys right then and there.

2) you can let it stand and explain the errors to the B. I. when you get a chance.

The application process is a test of its own. At the end of a long shift, we are still expected to fill out all those crime/arrest reports accurately. My suggestions would be these if you're not successful with this job application and you have to go through it again: type (do not hand write) your application and questionnaires whenever possible (you'll have to find a good old fashioned typewriter!); keep copies; and proofread them several times before you turn them in. Don't cheat yourself by doing things when you're tired or distracted during the hiring process.

Good luck

@Metro

This is my background packet not application. I have already been "Offered the position". The errors that I have made, I've caught and corrected as soon as I made them. Unfortunately I can't erase pen... But I'm bringing n the packet and pointing out the errors to my background investigator. Are you saying that an officer may be dismissed for putting someone's address in the phone number section-->correcting the error and moving on? God forbid anyone ever be human.

prosecutor:   So officer, you claim you saw the defendant raise his right arm, holding a pistol, and you fired to protect yourself, it that correct?

officer:             Yes sir.

prosecutor:   Now officer, I hand you states exhibit #2,  do you recognize it?

officer:             Yes sir, it is my original police statement.

prosecutor:   Could you read line four for the court please?

officer:            Unknown male was walking towards me and raised his left hand and i thought he had what appeared to be a gun in his hand so i fired three rounds at him striking him twice in the torso.

prosecutor:    officer, which hand was it? right or left?

                          ATTENTION TO DETAIL.

If it were me (or rather when it was me) I made copies of the blank forms, hand wrote the answers, proof read, then TYPED the final one to hand in. If you've got a chance to fix it before handing it in, do it.

I'd think it would reflect better on your character to ask for a duplicate than to turn in slop.

As for the "offered position": I will readily admit I know nothing of your specific situation or your would-be employer, but is it realistic that they would offer you a job prior to a thorough background investigation or completion of all the hiring-phase testing? For my agency it was a weeding out process, each test result letter contained a dismissal message, or a "congrats" you've been selected to continue.

I wish you well.

Maybe it is just me. Why not axe the agency? We have many members on this site axe us instead of the agency and I could never understand that. We had one discussion while discussing his application with police personnel failed to axe certain questions and came on this site to axe us. As I continue to say, we are not a society of thinkers. While chief if I viewed an applicant as a non thinker he/she was not considered for the position. Even if the applicant was highly educated and past military they had to be a thinker for consideration.

Yeah, I asked for a new one and they gave it to me. Every one except uncle..god you're all idiots...

So, we are the idiots?  Each department has a slightly different process for hiring.  My department did the background check BEFORE the interviews.  When you said that you had been through the interviews, from what I was used to, you had already been through the background.

Now, when you get several different possibilities to your question. . . .you call us idiots for trying to assertain just exactly where you were in the process.  If you really want to see an idiot. . . . .LOOK IN THE MIRROR and you'll see one staring back at you!  No, you came here trying to figure out how to not look like you we're trying to hide something.  Then you slap down the ones that were trying to find a way to help you?  If I was partnered up with you. . . . .we would be sitting a lot at the post until I had to go out because now I figure you are untrustworthy.

I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them.

jakec91. Choose your words very carefully. This is our house and you are a visitor. We are real cops and you are an applicant. I assure you someone will hand you your head. You came on here with a common sense question and I cannot figure why the light bulb did'n't kick in. To be a cop one must be a thinker.

Ok, I'll choose my words differently. People, next time do not reply unless you fully understand the nature of the question. Thank you ALL for trying and our opinions.

jakec91, please becareful when you address anyone here that has the little gold star by there name. If you disrespect any of them you could find your stay here very short. You do not come here asking for advice then, call those that are trying to help, idiots.

Metro, your advice was excellent.

This wasn't rocket science.  Apparently the OP ground a few holes with his eraser trying to get rid of the coffee cup ring.

Gee.  I sorta like the username UncleGodurallidiots.

How much do ya'll want to bet we see this one again under a different name??? Hopefully when he resurfaces, he will be less mouthy. I personally think his question was legit, however, he didn't give enough information and when questioned about it got his widdle feelings hurt. Who knows, he may make the cut and make a good officer. Come on guys, the academy and his FTO will take care of that neatness issue MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA
