I'm looking for a little advice from you all. I've applied to a police department in southwest Florida ( 3 hours away from my current location) on April 1st. I received a call back fairly quickly and took the written and physical test, both of which I passed, I also finished the oral board in the same week. I was told that they wanted to continue on and start a background investigation, so that was started and finished in about 3weeks. After that I was giving a starting date of Sept. 9th (signed a paper agreeing to pay and start date), assuming I pass the polygraph and psych evaluation. I took my poly yesterday (first time taking one) and it's not looking good. I answered everything accordingly, was hooked up, had questions asked, but at the end I was told there were two questions that stood out (you'll just have to trust me on this).

The first problem question was "have you ever bought or sold drugs", I've done neither. The tester asked me what went through my mind when that question was asked and I told him I used to have a prescription for Adderrall and a couple worker had asked me to sell him my pills, but of course I never did nor did I agree to.  The tester said that very well could have caused the reaction and noted that on the results.

They second  problem question was "have you ever sexually assaulted anyone?"  absolutely not. He then asked what went through my mind but this time I had nothing... Nothing went through my mind.

About 1hr after leaving I received a call from the PD and was told that there are some questions that need to be reviewed and they are canceling my appointment for my psych evaluation for the time being,  which was supposed to be Monday the 12. I was told they will review and call me backwith an update

What do you all think... Think I'll be Ok?  They have invested a lot of time and money in me just because of results from an otherwise silly test.

It's pretty upsetting to be questioned about something that I know I have absolutely never done. .

You're reading too much into this! Relax and let the background investigators do their thing. Take a deep breath and go take care of the psych evaluation. Once you've gotten through that, wait some more! Let the system work itself out.

yeah, you're probably right.  they cancelled my appointment for the psych evaluation, they won't let me do the evaluation until they figure out what's going on with those 2 questions

08-09-13 1425   -   I find it intereting that you title the discussion thread "Another Polygraph Nightmare" indicating (or at least seems to indicate) there was already at least one or more previous and yet you state in your opening post, "I took my poly yesterday ( first time taking one)" and go on to say that it is not looking good.  How could it be "Another polygraph nightmare" if this is your first?  Or is this also a lie?  Can you clarify?

Also a lie? I'd love to clarify for you. The reason I titled the thread what I did is because the results I pulled up regarding polygraph testing, many of which lead right to this forum. Seems like there are quite a few people that have supposedly told the truth but for whatever reason been flagged.

Interesting. I know nothing about the polygraph other than the fact I have taken two of them. You might consider asking to be tested by another operator. This request may step on some toes considering ego's of coppers. By all means I want to follow this and request you report back with your final results. Another thing to consider is have a polygraph operator (non LE possibly a Private Detective Agency) test you with the same questions.Another thing I noticed when checking your profile is you show the thin blue line over your screen name. This does not set well with us. Keep in mind you are an applicant and not yet a police officer. You may be getting ahead of yourself. You may want to use another pic. Thanks

I noticed on the forum REJECTED.you stated you processed with two departments and turned them down. I would contact them and see if they are still willing to hire you. Get some experience under your belt and then seek a larger agency. I question the fact twice you turned down agencies that offered you positions. Maybe the positions are still available.

I'm hoping I'll hear back monday with the results, if they are not in my favor I will ask for a retest. The polygraph was given by an ex LEO, working for a private company.

The first position I turned down was for the city I grew up in, which has a pretty bad name regarding law enforcement. I was put into the system by an instructor from the academy. The 2nd position was for reserve (possibly turning into more in the future)

The agency I'm poly testing for now is a fairly small agency.

Having been there and done that prior to my finally being hired and having turned a couple of departments down because I wanted to go elsewhere (today's job climate being similar to, if not worse than when I tried), if I had it to do over again, I would not be turning anyone down.  Bad name or no, you should have grabbed that department when it was offered to you, done your time, received the experience and if situation remained the same, lateraled elsewhere.

I completely understand. I also turned down the two agencies because I was already most of the way through with the agency I just tested with, I had already finsihed written, physical, and oral board.

The Sgt. was a bit aprehensive at first because this agency was so far away from where I'm currently located, he had trouble understanding why I would go to THEIR agency vs others that were closer and very well know (Tampa, Hillsborough, St. Pete...ect). I had a feeling that if I told them I was going to continue through with another agnecy that he would get nervous and bump me.

But heading back to the original topic..I know it's kind of tough to answer but do you think I have anything to worry about?

I will go on to say that I have been where you are now and walked the path where you now walk.  I have taken several polygraph tests and have only failed one.  Long story short, it was B.S. on the part of the agency involved.  I will not get into who the agency was or what the circumstances were as it serves no purpose at this time.  Suffice it to say that I have been there and done that.  I have no idea what another agency will do as each case is handled by each individual department you may be applying with and by a candidate by candidate basis.  The only thing you can do is about the same thing that I had to do.  Go through the adversity and keep applying until you find that one agency that not only says that they want to hire you, but actually does so.  I had a very long and extended walk and in some cases, a seemingly very difficult climb.  I have known many candidates who have given up for far lesser things and in a shorter period of time.  All of the turn-downs were their own individual lesson(s) in disappointment.  Some were more difficult than others.  But having gone through all of it, I believe it defines who I am in my career.  I was not about to give up.  I didn't put myself through the academy, put my body through those paces so I could come up empty handed.

I appreciate the advice.  Out of 1,500 applicants they sent through 5, me being one of those five. I'll keep everyone updated.

Everyone has the right idea, just keep trying till someone says "you're hired".  I actually went through the same things with the polygraph once (well it was the voice stress analaysis but it's the same thing).  It came up as "showing stress" on one of the questions I for a department I was applying to and couldn't understand why.  It was an asking if I commited a certain crime which I knew I never have and never will.  In another polygrpah I was asked the same question and passed it with flying colors.  Didn't get hired with either one but that's just the game we play.  Just keep at it and it will pay off in the end.

If this agency doesn't go through I'll definately keep trying, there are 2 more agencies in SW FL that are hiring.

The main reasons I think I may be ok is that the tester never said I had failed, the agency never said I was DQ'd after receiving results, they are in dire need of 5 LEO's and I'm in that 5, They've given me a start date and they had 2 LEO's drive 3+ hours just to talk to me for about 30 min. Thats what I keep running through my head anyway...it makes me feel better..

Just an observation....the Polygraph and the Voice Stress Analyzer ARE NOT THE SAME THING. Although their purpose may be similar (to detect deception to specific questions)..............they measure different things and are totally unrelated. But I could be wrong, I have only been a Polygraph Examiner for 20 years and have supervised both Polygraph and Voice Stress Analyzer teams.

hmm...... "Silly test?" well, without that silly test a lot of really bad people could get into a very well respected and very old profession. The police deparment. If you lie they should know. If you get jumpy they need to know. Why are you so nervous? Is your pulse and heart rate fluctuating during questions that are pertinent to your integrity?  Try another profession where you will not be drug tested or polygraphed perhaps. Goodluck.

Perhaps you are saying that the polygraph test should be tested/modified so as to eliminate the chances of being incorrect in details of future candidates. Why don't you voice your opinion to your hiring agents? They may be able to give you good feedback. Goodluck with your future career.

Just keep calm and breathe slowly.. Don't over think the questions, that'll start stressing you out and will make it look like you're lying. I had to take three of those things before I was able to be okay by the fourth try.

e8nt394, why bludgeon a well-intentioned remark to death with a sarcastic semantic club? I am confident readers here get the reference as a call to stay focused and strive hard to make the ideal a reality rather than the self-serving connotation you conveniently apply.

As a newcomer to this community with no introduction and a skeleton profile, you might try reading Forum Topics before wading in with both fists.

In any case, you can get off my back.

Slow down and take a breath. Marly meant it exactly as explained: "Stay Focused on the goal".

"Prize" could also be meant as a Reward. If your job is not rewarding in some sense, why do it?
