Hello follow members. I am currently perusing a degree in Criminal Justice. For my Intro to Criminal Justice I must ask a few interview questions to someone in the criminal justice field. The police departments and courts around my area are very bust and I do not want to take them away from their duties. Please if someone in the field please answer the following questions:

·What does it mean in the criminal justice profession to "serve and protect?" How does it relate to duty?

· What duty do different people in criminal justice (CJ) have to their community? (civilians, fellow CJ professionals, inmates, victims, families, etc.)

· What are the ethical/mental/physical challenges of living up to the expectation of being a CJ professional? (Look at the use of the force continuum and decision-making: when to act, when not to act, how to act?)

·How does teamwork occur in your agency? How important is it in your professional and daily routine?

·How does physical and mental fitness play an important role in officers being able to do their job effectively?

Please only serious answer from someone in the field and answer as best as possible. If I need to I will go to a local police department, but as I stated I do not want to take anyone away from their duties. If you do chose to answer these your name, your job title, and what area you work for. Thanks in advance!

You're not likely to get many responses to answer your questions, just a heads up. Cops around here are a suspicious bunch, by nature.

Even though the Departments in your area may be busy, these questions are best asked one on one. Swing by the Department, ask for the desk officer, supervisor, admin or even someone that may be on station. I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you out. Best wishes.

Maybe its just me but the original post reads like a homework assignment. But yeah, go ask at the closest station.

I will give it a shot. I will also be checking college papers for plagiarism.

Before I reply, I would like your college, the instructor's name, the course name and the course code.

In addition, I want the research paper instructions from the course syllabus.

If you are willing to provide this information, I will do an informal inquiry. If found to be legit, I will provide some answers to your questions.

Thanks.

 Xcieg,

could it be possible that part of the exercise is to get you to start personally interacting with someone in the CJ system? Might it serve you later on when you want to start ride-a-longs or applying for a job?

aside from homework, wouldn't such contact give you a better sense of what jobs are like in this field?

just my .02

Good point, I never really thought of it this way. I was trying to be proactive just in the event that I cannot make it to a local department. I know that some departments around here may be apprhensive about answering these questions. I do lead a very busy life and was afriad that I may not be able to make it. My luck is I will try on a very busy day and no one will answer my questions.  I do always appreciate feedback.

Thank you for your reply. Due to the feedback from this post I will be pressing the in person route. It is not a paper or research assignment, it was more or less a homework assignment. I will still however provide with the request information privately to protect the information just so you know I am legitimate.

Hello all, thanks to everyone who posted your responses or feedback. I was mostly trying to be proactive incase I was not able to make it to a local department. I am going to make a few calls to find out who would be willing to help. I am sorry for any time that I have wasted.

Here are responses to your questions.

1. To 'serve and protect' represents the distillation of what every law enforcement agency wishes to convey to the citizenry where they work. We are public servants and our job is to protect people and property. Pretty basc..

2. There is only one duty: To serve and protect. To give that legs, it is our professionalism, integrity and trust that makes the work we do successful.

3. The aforementioned challenges are simply the design and requirement of law enforcement work. There isn't any 'living up to' per se. It is just doing your job. With proper training and preparation, decision making is just another daily aspect of our work.

4. Teamwork occurs when situations needs it. We don't ride around in packs doing our work. We gather as a team as needed. And again, when properly trained and given experience, with a dash of trust, teamwork is the natural outcome.

5. Mental and physical fitness is mandatory for an officer to perform well. We give up the right to be couch potatoes. However, it takes an superior mentality to keep up with lifetime fitness. Lifelong fitness. This should occur during an entire career.

I like the idea of the in-person route to getting these questions answered. But in case you don't find anyone in time to complete your assignment, Sarge's answers are pretty concise and on point.

As far as wasting our time, no need to apologize. We choose how our time is spent here and you're not wasting it if we look at your post.

i dont know, this original poster has just joined pl, no intro as requested on forums, (i have sent him a pm and requested such), and first he wants us to help in doing homework and then his next three posts are in discussions on tactical gear and equipment and offers very definate opinions. I am wondering where all this experience has come from.  I DO like to know with whom i (we) are speaking. And lastly, it is the end of june, what type of  criminal justice course is offered by colleges in the summer?

 Hello my friend,

I have withdrawn my other posts. I was posting in the public areas and they were my opinions. I did not know that I needed to post an introduction. I know that the information that I posted may have no proof to back it up. The people in the forums should know that they are forums. I am sorry if I offended you in any way. I am taking online courses as I do not have time to attend traditional classes. These classes are year round. You can find the course information at Baker.edu. Yes I asked a few questions for the fact I do not know if I will be able to make it to a local department. I work 2 jobs, mind you the second is only a few hours a week, and have other commitments. This is the 4th of July week and our departments are particularly busy this week. Please help me understand where I can post and share the little expertise that I do have.

Okay. I think he gets the point. Now, before we all go into attack mode and scare off another potential member. Let's give him some time to post his intro. I, too, sent him a PM and would like to extend an olive branch until he fails to meet our demands.

C'mon, guys. You know what it's like to be a newbie.

Xcieg you got a really good answer from the Sarge.  Use it to guide your research when you do some live interviewing.  As for dese other guys, I will vouch for their twisted sense of humor.  I always carry some treats in my pocket in case any of 'em try to bite my leg.

I think if you pass the psych eval for any agency it's a sign you shouldn't work there.  Now, if you're judged to be completely batsh*t crazy during that same eval, you've got a good chance at succceeding in LE.
