I am a college sophmore about to take my first civil service exam in november.

being a police officer has been a life long dream of mine and i really want to become a K9 handler for one of the local Police Departments in Central New York ( Where I live)

Any advice on how to study for the test or how to become a K9 handler is welcome

Thank you all!

Don't study. Just relax and take your time. Get into the department and put in your service time before working yourself into a K9 position as there are many other officers (I'm sure) who are patiently waiting for their opportunity to get into a K9 position.

Good luck and welcome!

Get yourself a Arco police officer study guide which will help but practice memorization skills as this is a big part of  civil the test. Practice memorizing license plated as you drive. I agree with rypete  get through the civil service exam and getting hired and through the academy nothing wrong with a career goal like being a k9 officer but your a long way from there. Also make sure you keep or are in excellent shape before taking the civil service test as a police academy instructor I've known many who flunked out on the PT just to get hired. google cooper fitness standards as this is the standard that police use in NY. Make sure you can pass it comfortably not just get by. This will also help you with academy PT when you get into the academy. Good luck on your career path.

Caboosing along with trouttrooper, you may need to take the test once to see what the nature of the test is like. There are things you can buy and read but it doesn't beat actually taking the test. Then you'll say to yourself, "Ohhh, I see what they want."

If you're a college sophomore, you have plenty of time to prepare. Taking one test is not a do-or-die situation. Take the test and learn.

Also, to be a K9 officer, you'll need to work your way through a few years of boots-on-the-ground cop work. You just don't sign up to be a Canine Guy, or a SWAT guy or a Detective. You have to earn those position by creating a great work profile and/or through promotion.

Stay in school. As The Sarge commented K-9 and other units are not entry level. You will pay your dues. Baby steps. Best to you.

First may i say welcome to policelink and i wish you success in your careet aspirations. Prepare. Prepare. Later on hopefully it will be Train, train. I agree with Trouttrooper  and the sarge to  begin training your brain by reading  such as the Arco police exam preps to see what is currently being asked in exam situations and get used that kind of mind set. Also as stated, begin preparing your body physically.  Begin and maintain a workout regimen. Lastly, keep your lifestyle clean,  watch your driving habits, associates, women (always a problem), and your personal depts and credit.  Best of luck
