The Black Forest Fire in Colorado Springs is hopefully starting to calm down.  We had a heck of a week.  Approximately 430 homes were total losses in  the fire, two residents were killed, and nearly 40,000 residents were evacuated in the fire.  There were numerous pets, cats, dogs, horses and wildlife that perished in the fire.  Very sad week for residents, Police and Firefighters.

All of the news briefings you have been seeing on the news, was coming from the College parking lot, at the campus I work at.  The Media and initial command post was staged in our parking lot.  I have never experienced such a tragic event in my life.  I have seen enough fire and destruction to last me the rest of my life. I had three close friends who lost their homes to this fire, and one of the victims was an Officer on our department who had to evacuate so fast, she had no time to take anything from her home.  Some of the homes that were destroyed were mulit-million dollar homes.

When the fire first broke out, our Officer received a reverse 911 a call that the fire was approaching her neighborhood, and when she walked out side her home to see how close the fire was, it was already at the edge of her property in the tree tops.  She had time to grab her dog and  car keys and run. There are a lot of very sad stories associated with this tragic event that you will probably never hear or see in the media reports.

I have been involved in three major fires in the past few years, and I have never seen anything like this one.  The is no feeling worse than a fire in a major residential area taking out everything in it's path and all you can do is stand there and watch it happen.  I am amazed  that we only lost two residents in this fire, because it was moving so fast.

My thoughts and prays go out to all the families who lost loved ones and property in this tragic event.

Thank you for this personal account, JIMROC.  I am moved by it.  My heart goes out to Colorado.

My nephew is a CAL FIRE fighter.  CAL FIRE also goes to assist fights in other states. I expect Colorado is getting help from many states.  A lot of lives are on the line.  Please keep us posted.  I would like to see this important thread keep going.

To show you the level of dedication of the fire fighters fighting this fire, I want to share a very sad story that will bring tears to your eyes, or at least it did mine.

While Fire Fighters were trying to save a home, they found the families 4 German Shepherd dogs and one cat, that died in the fire.  So the family would not have to see this tragic site, the fire fighters removed the animals from the home and took the time to bury the 4 German Shepherds and the family cat on their property.

They placed rocks outlining the graves and made crosses to mark each of them. I have never seen anything like this in my career.  The Fire Fighters felt so bad, they personally notified the family about their loss.  They explained to the family that they did everything possible to save their home and their pets, but the fire took it all.  The Fire Fighters felt bad about not being able to save them and wept with the family.

There are many stories coming out this this tragic event like the one above.  It is overwhelming.
