Nicely said Joe! I know exactly what you mean in that I would do anything to protect my son and take anything thrown at me for him and my wife, but I hadn't before now viewed each step as a battle for them. I've been having a few problems with motivation, but your post just gave me all the motivation I need! If every step is a battle for my wife and son, and all those who I could end up helping in the future, then I will fight with every thing in me at every battle. Thanks for posting this! God bless you man!

You're welcome, just glad I could help. Sometimes we all need a little help or direction and just have to look at things from a different light or maybe prioritize what's most important to us in life by asking ourselves why we are doing what we're doing or why do we want it in the first place. And thank y'all for the kind words.

Yep,I had a young wife two kids and one in the oven when I began the academy.I had wanted to be a Police Officer and/or a minister all my life.I had more problems than one could imagine, but knew this is what I always wanted.I could have blubbered to my spouse, had second thoughts or any number of mind boggling difficulties if I had wanted to ,but knew I had to defeat my own demons.Nothing whatsoever wrong with asking advice, but I have always realized the any number of people have MANY more problems than I.We can,if we want to ALL pick others brains, but in the final analysis we have to make decisions on OUR OWN.I noted I had NO advanced education and spent twenty plus years earning two degrees, spent numerous hours in court per week and had numerous part time jobs.I might add it was a h3ll of a lot more difficult than the second week in recruit school. We must ALL set a goal and work hard for it if we are to succeed at anything in life.

If...... after all the previous advice..... You are still lost...............Follow this road map.

1- Are you in over your head?         If so, Head for the Shallow End of the Pool and get out before you drown.

2- Are you over-thinking everything? If so, You would not be the 1st or last, but You have a crossroads coming up and a decision to make.

3- Stay or Go...............Pick one and own it it.

4-  If you stay.....Stop cranking yourself up.......... Immediately change your PoliceLink Name and Avatar to reflect your decision............Pick something like "The Big Easy" and mellow out, let the lessons sink in..... Be the Best Police Cadet that you know inside you are and that is why you stay........... Or if you go...... Go with Pride...... Avoid depression...Use this as a learning experience to determine what you really want to do in life....... Skys the limit............ and then... go............ and be something like a Highly Recommended  House Painter or an Award Winning Chef. These are two quick examples of Honorable Careers I value... much more.... than a Half-Ass Police Cadet who can't get out of his own way.

5- Decide and Make us proud !

oh it doesn't? you and DonnaLynn should go have a conversation about it. She got really excited about my other post regarding a joke I made on the forums. I would expect you two could join forces and you could wear her little kitty profile pic on your giant blue Yosemite sam hat. it would be the ultimate fighting experience. plus she mentioned something about knives so you two should join forces, you both already have your weaponry available!

Okay, time to calm down and just stop...  you are way off base.  Just sayin'

This.  And really, from the bottom of my heart, ALL the input of the LEOs who contribute to this thread is SPOT ON.  In their response, you see the full spectrum. But every response lands on one thing - integrity, commitment and courage.  To a civilian, this thread looks like a 'chorus of conscience.'

Even the tactless hard-nose has points to weigh in.  He too won't brook a lukewarm committment.  Nor performance riven by crippliing trepidation. Walking away with dignity takes great courage.

I will add only one thing.  As an artist, I always tell others who are afraid to put what they've got on the line, "Ya gotta stink before you can get good."  Yup. I have to remind myself of that one.  But I know my limits.  I'm not made to be a painter of floral still lives and Laguna sunsets.  I can do it, but I'll do a mediocre job, bet on it.  How do I know this?  Because my heart's not in it.  So...I leave flowers and sunsets to God.

In other words, some things you just know in your bones.

MentalUnrest, Policelink professionals exhort you to continue to act honorably.  I credit you for posting your genuine concerns here for public consideration.

This has gotten redonkulous. Look here, if you are stressing out in the second week of the ACADEMY perhaps you should reconsider your decision to enter law enforcement. Please do this before you get yourself or somebody else hurt or killed. Going with your heart sounds great in theory however in the real world it sometimes does not apply. If your decision is to stay, relax. This job is really not that hard.

You can't cure stupid.

06-12-13 0058 PST:

First item of business is to note the change of Avatar name to something positive.  Taking it Onestepatatime shows that you are taking a more positive approach.  That you yourself noticed that you have started the week strong indicates that you are beginning to settle in to your surroundings and that you are feeling more comfortable with your progress.  That you state your intentions to finish the week strong indicates that you have re-focused your efforts and goals with a purpose.

Bump SkoolCop!

And Onestepatatime: I think it's great that you changed your avatar name, it denotes a change in attitude, which seems to be exactly what you needed. I think it was wise of you to seek the counsel of those who have gone before you, and I hope their words have helped. Keep your head up and push on, and you'll do great. God bless!

Keep at it and keep your chin up. Take it from someone who would give there back teeth to be in your position in an academy! If it works out for you then take it as a sign of the determination inside you but if it doesnt work then see it as a learning curve, you leanred new things that will stay with you for life

Of course, Dave..... With the way the economy is these days, retirement is a mirage.
