I hate waiting! I know it will be worth it though, and I don't really have another option lol.. I'm not the only one who's felt like this during the hiring process right??

I'm waiting too. It does suck. Just keep doing whatever else you've got to do until the next step happens.

I've waited so long for a department that I forgot I even applied to them till I got the rejection letter.  I wasn't allowed to ask for updates so I remained quite till the end.

That's crazy! I am not allowed to call and ask for updates either... I am just hoping I get that call back sometime soon...... I think that my greatest weakness is my impatience lol.

Wait to see if you'll be advancing in the next phase of the testing process. Wait to see if you made the certified hiring list. Then wait again for an entire year only to realize there will be no more hirings and you have to re-test AGAIN!

You know what's worse?  It NEVER gets any easier.  That said....... Get used to it.  When you go on the better part of 15 years, then you can talk to me about how much you hate it.

Right on, SkoolCop.  Serenity in the squad car is more likely a crack-ho in custody.

The further one advances through the procedure the shorter the time becomes because,of course they are dealing with fewer people.Dependant upon the size of the outfit you are applying for it will probably be four to nine months. It's only natural to be anxious.

Yeah I see what you're saying... This department has about 780 sworn officers, with atleast a couple of hundred applicants this last round. I didn't know that this field was so competitive before I started applying. I naievely thought that because I got a degree I'd be a shoe in... Can you say rude awakening?? lol

The best advice I can give is do not attempt to rush those processing you. I can assure you if you become a pest processing will move at a snails pace. Don't call for updates as they will keep you apprised. Take this information to the bank.

Okay thanks for the advice uncledennis1! I'll do my best to keep my impatience in check.

Yeah...... some 15 years after I took my first written exam, and 10 years after having placed myself through the academey as a self-sponsored pre-service cadet.  So no more complaining of the wait.

I think that was Military wide. We had the same thing in the Army.

Wow, you must have been really determined. Most people would probably stop after the first year or two... You give me strength! Alright, I agree, no more complaining. :-) And BUMP!

I knew what I wanted, I worked hard to get it and I wasn't going to let anyone get me to the point of quitting.  Prior to putting myself through the academy, a background invsestigator for one department told me that I wouldn't pass the academics portion of their academy because of my high school grades.  He also told me that he didn't think I would pass the physical portion of their academy due to my size (I was 6 ft and about 165 when I put myself through).  I found out later that the academics portion of that academy had been lowered by that department to 70% minimum to allow for a higher pass rate for certain groups of people while the academy I was attending maintained a 80% minimum standard.   That knowledge only served to motivate me further.  The academy I attended was situated literally on the side of a small mountain while the academy for the other department was situated in a relatively flat part of the county with the steepest grade being the steps from the track to the street (all 20 of them).  When we ran, we went up hill to start.  When we started down hill, we had to run back up hill to finish.  With every cadet that dropped out physically or dropped out academically, I became more and more motivated.  I knew what I wanted and the word "QUIT" was NOT in my vocabulary.

The economic climate during that time was similar to what it is now.  Hiring freezes, budget cuts, lay offs and IF a department was hiring, they had one or two openings and hundreds if not thousands of applicants looking to get one of those spots.  Back then, like now, if a spot is offered, it would be in your best interest to take it....... even if it isn't where you really wanted to work.

Bottom line:  You have to decide if you are going to stick with it and see each wait through no matter how long it takes and no matter how many setbacks you encounter or if you are going to pull the plug or otherwise give up.
