Hi

My name is Rachel and apparently I have been a member here for about 5 years but this is the first time I have posted. I am halfway finished with my BA in Criminal Justice and I am hoping to attend BLET next year after the hubby retires from the military. I am a little nervous because I have not worked in 6 years since getting out of the service. I am a little old to be starting a career in law enforcement but I am looking forward to it. If there are any other late starters out there let me know how it worked out for you and any advice for a mother of 5 starting a new career would be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to getting to know you guys.

Good Morning Patchez:

I retired from the US Army in 1991 and immediately went to work for the Sheriff's Ofc here (still working). Don't fret - you can do it... I discovered that sure it wasn't easy - but it boils down to how bad do you want it (the badge)... I finished by BS also a tad older than most in my class.  You just don't give up.. And add to that I have been fighting cancer for the last 8 years --  We were taught in the military to never give up - suck it up and drive on..  You will do fine - being a Mom is far harder than the rest of this.. My wonderful wife has been my strongest supporter -- It can be done - just rememeber - you have a host of experiences to pull from - time management will come easy (grin)... One step at a time and Never Give Up !!!

Welcome... I hope you enjoy your stay at PL

Above all, we must realize that no arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. It is a weapon our adversaries in today’s world do not have.

Wow guys thank you so much for your encouragement. I am so nervous about joining the job force after 6 years as a stay at home mom but I am sooo  ready to do this. Just a couple more months hopefully to wait. We are waiting on the Army to finish his MEB before I can start my training.

Click on become a cop. You do realize you will not be offered a positon with a police agency without jumping thru many hoops. I recently completed a background on an applicant and she thought after the initial interview she would be appointed. She had completed the academy. She had a questionable background and was rejected during the hiring process. Agencies like to hire former military however, it is not a shoe in.

I was looking there last night and I was supprised at how many problems people were having with being hired. I know it will take a lot of time and dedication just to get my foot in the door. I saw one post where a woman applied at 13 different departments before she was granted and initial interview. It was a little discouraging but I believe that I can do this and do this well.
