FLOATING 7-FOOT HEAD LEAVES ROWERS SCRATCHING HEADS

By Kevin Dolak | ABC News Blogs – 3 hours ago

"The crew team at New York's Marist College came across a puzzling sight this week when a large, foam head, floating in the Hudson River, crossed their path toward the end of their morning row.

While on the river Monday morning, crew coach Matt Lavin was the first to spot the mysterious 7-foot-high, fiberglass-c0vered head, which is 4 to 5 feet wide. The ominous sighting gave the coach pause, and he had his team stay back as he approached to investigate.

"[Lavin] was in a small motor boat beside the team," Greg Cannon, director of public affairs for the Poughkeepsie school, told ABCNews.com. "He didn't know what it was at first, but saw it was an obstruction that would have been in the way of the shipping channel. So he went out to investigate."

Once he realized he wasn't in a scene from "The Planet of the Apes" and that it wouldn't be terribly heavy, he wrapped a line around the head and towed it himself. The crew team then helped him pull in from the water.

"They pulled it in and it's some kind of Styrofoam core with a fiberglass shell over it," Cannon said. "Enough of the foam was exposed that it got water logged. It had gotten pretty heavy. Members of the team helped drag it up onto the dock."

As for where the head came from, that's still a mystery, but Cannon said he's open to any theories.

The most compelling theory he has heard? The head is from a Mardi Gras float, was washed away by Hurricane Katrina and, eight years later, somehow ended up in the Hudson River.

Cannon laughed that off, but said that it could be close.

"It could have been washed away in a storm," he said, "maybe even Sandy."

Canot tell from the pictures if it is a 'stand alone head' or there is a headless body somewhere, the apparently flat base suggestes (to me)  possibly the former.

I hoped they checked inside for soldiers. It could be a Trojan head.

Cedardale - Hmmm...a base...or... is it a 'collar' that once fit into the body of...who??

Annd...from Newsday - this REALLY helps...

HAIL ATLANTIS!!

"No one is sure how the mystery head ended up in the Hudson, or even which direction it came from, because the Hudson flows both northward and southward, depending on the tide, with tidal forces sometimes pushing saltwater north from the Atlantic Ocean and freshwater from the river's source -- at Lake Tear of the Clouds in the Adirondacks -- flowing south."

MARDI GRAS PROP THEORY EXPANDS

Rachel Elsensohn took one glance at the Hudson River head Friday and knew she was looking at a Mardi Gras prop.

"It's totally typical of what we would use," said Elsensohn, who with her husband is proprietor of New Orleans-based Mardi Gras Decorators. "We build out of foam. We cover it with fiberglass. I've been in the Mardi Gras business for 25 years and it looks like a Mardi Gras prop." "

FYI, they do celebrate Mardi Gras in Canada as well. Although the "official" source of the Hudson is within NYS, there are tributaries that can be traced well into Canada.

Some Aliens were at Mardi Gras and had used it on there float and on leaving Earths gravity it fell out of there open trunk and landed in the Hudson River. Were it got snagged on some trees and after the sping thaw it had broken loose and started floating south.

I believe that it is the head off the bust of Michael Jackson. Maybe the chimp stole it and tried to float away on it. So yeah this is from the PLANET OF THE APES. LOL

My Theory...... Head for Headless Horseman Found

Tarrytown is a village in the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, New York, United States. It is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, about 25 miles (40 km) north of midtown Manhattan in New York City, and is served by a stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line. To the north of Tarrytown is the village of Sleepy Hollow (formerly "North Tarrytown"), to the south the village of Irvington and to the east unincorporated parts of Greenburgh. The Tappan Zee Bridge crosses the Hudson at Tarrytown, carrying the New York State Thruway (Interstates 87 and 287) to South Nyack, Rockland County and points in Upstate New York

A New York Ghost Story

retold by

S. E. Schlosser

One cold winter night, early in the New Year, a certain Dutchman left the tavern in Tarrytown and started walking to his home in the hollow nearby. His path led next to the old Sleepy Hollow cemetery where a headless Hessian soldier was buried. At midnight, the Dutchman came within site of the graveyard. The weather had warmed up during the week, and the snow was almost gone from the road. It was a dark night with no moon, and the only light came from his lantern.

The Dutchman was nervous about passing the graveyard, remembering the rumors of a galloping ghost that he had heard at the tavern. He stumbled along, humming to himself to keep up his courage. Suddenly, his eye was caught by a light rising from the ground in the cemetery. He stopped, his heart pounding in fear. Before his startled eyes, a white mist burst forth from an unmarked grave and formed into a large horse carrying a headless rider.

The Dutchman let out a terrible scream as the horse leapt toward him at a full gallop. He took to his heels, running as fast as he could, making for the bridge since he knew that ghosts and evil spirits did not care to cross running water. He stumbled suddenly and fell, rolling off the road into a melting patch of snow. The headless rider thundered past him, and the man got a second look at the headless ghost. It was wearing a Hessian commander's uniform.

The Dutchman waited a good hour after the ghost disappeared before crawling out of the bushes and making his way home. After fortifying himself with schnapps, the Dutchman told his wife about the ghost. By noon of the next day, the story was all over Tarrytown. The good Dutch folk were divided in their opinions. Some thought that the ghost must be roaming the roads at night in search of its head. Others claimed that the Hessian soldier rose from the grave to lead the Hessian soldiers in a charge up nearby Chatterton Hill, not knowing that the hill had already been taken by the British.

Whatever the reason, the Headless Horseman continues to roam the roads near Tarrytown on dark nights from that day to this.

Note: This is a retelling of the folktale which was used by Washington Irving to create his masterpiece, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
