Just applied to attend the Virginia State Police Academy after I retire from the Corps. I've long awaited to become a Trooper.  The wife is concerned about the danger, and of course the pay. I cant imagine starting any other career though. Any advice?

Thanks for your service. Yes, there is danger. As far as pay you need to inquire with the agency. Your comments are some what confusing. Have you made application with the agency? One does not apply for the academy unless it is self sponsor. State patrol agencies process the applicant and when/if hired give a starting date for the academy. You will probably live on campus and have weekends off. That is how it works in my state.

My apologies for the confusion. I filled out the application online since they are hiring; haven't been contacted yet about starting the process. Definitely in the infancy stage of this process so my verbiage may be confusing. After serving my country for so long, it seems only natural to transition into doing something exciting while serving my community. I deeply respect and thank you for your public service and sacrifice as well. As violence against LEO's seem to have escalated over the past week, I'm often reminded of the danger, but feel that in joining I can do something to help protect our communities.  Anyways, thanks for the comments..

Welcome to Police Link, and Thank You for Your Service!!

Be patient with the hiring process. It can take some time. For you, the wait shouldn't be an issue. Having been in the Military, you should be used to the "Hurry up and wait" syndrome (lol).

Yes, there are inherent dangers to the job. It goes with the territory. But, also keep in mind there is a risk just getting up out of bed every day. One never knows what the day will bring. A simple drive to work could end up as a fatal crash. The list goes on and on. Talk to the Mrs, let her know how much you want the job, and get her on your side. Family support is important!

Best wishes.
