Well here I go again but this time in a whole different direction. After a lot of research and soul searching I have decided to pursue a career in correction's instead of being a cop. I already passed everything but going before an oral board and that should be anytime now,I picked correction's because I think I can get some good life experience while still taking my college classes. In about two years I will be done with school and done with my probation with this agency so if I choose I can do a crossover class at the LE academy to be a cop,or I may just stick with correction's. One thing is for sure I have learned a lot from reading posts here and talking with officer's in my area. I got a pretty good idea of what I am about to walk into and I know correctional officers are hated as much as cops by the public and the inmates. By the way if anybody is wondering I am going to work for the state not a jail, and the money is a little more than what I am making now.

How's that HOPE and CHANGE working out for you?

What would you do for a Klondike bar?

This is a good decision. It will give you several options for the LE field. It can be used as a "foot in the door" for another LE job or can be a solid career choice depending on your preferences. Either way, I wish you luck.

Best of luck to you.  I kind of know what it's like to change; I've gone to pursuing a career as a LEO to going back to school for cyber security.

Well just an update, the agency has asked for some forms to be filled out and turned in which I did today and I got a chance to talk to the recruiter face to face and she told me without asking that I will be getting an interview very soon and some of the things on my app looked good so hopefully I will be good to go.

Good for you ! I for one have no problem with you going to work for your states DOC (wonder why LOL). Working for DOC is a great career. You can move to any facility that has an opening and not lose time, you are covered by civil service and the rules don't change with the administration ! Good luck and I hope you find your niche !!!

You know whats funny though, some people that I know who are cops are just civilians say that corrections is a mindless job...why would they say that?

Corrections officers and Police officers are a special breed. In both professions you need to stay calm, rational and mentally flexible in a conflict because you are paid to maintain control of volatile situations and people.

I wish you the best of luck and hope everything goes well.

Well it is very different inside than it is outside !!! My B-I-L is a retired Asst. Warden did 25 inside and worked his way up from tower to tier to the office. I for one could NEVER work inside. But bless the ones who can ! Be careful not to get jaded. Remember, It's easy to look at the bad in everyone when that's all you see day in and day out. Street cops get that way too but it's easier for someone working on the inside to look for the bad.

They have it all wrong. In corrections, you get to deal with mindless zombies. Many LEOs that bring people in the back door have told me that they couldn't work in corrections and deal with these individuals on a daily basis (even though they've arrested them numerous times).

Good luck going forward. I'm sure this is going to work out for you. I never considered corrections to be a "mindless job" . I know I couldn't do it. It takes a special breed to do that job.

Good luck. I started in corrections and loved the work It isn't for everyone and I know a lot of cops who try it but can't do it. I moved on to do what I always wanted but I learned a lot. Keep your eyes open and enjoy the job.
