I am scheduled for an oral board in a couple of weeks for the State Patrol.  I will be doing my best to prepare and have a question.  I will be doing a ride along soon and what are good questions to ask? I understand what may not be good questions but are there any questions in particular that could convey how passionate I am about becoming a state trooper? Thanks!

Don't play 20 questions with your host. Make a short list of questions you truly are interested in having answered and then let the conversation be dictated by the LEO. Questions about the work schedule, shift changes, opportunities for advancement, etc.are appropriate.. Asking "Have you ever shot someone?" will probably get you dropped off at the closest gas station.

Run a search of the forums on here for "ride along" and you will find several other threads with a wealth of information available. Take a look at those and you should be able to set yourself up for an informative and enjoyable experience.

Keep in mind the officer you will be riding along with will not be on the oral board.

You really don't need to ask a lot of questions. Just look, listen and pay attention to what the officer is doing. It's not so much a fact finding ride-a-long inasmuch as exposure to the specific job.

So, dress professional casual (no jeans or printed t-shirts) and do (as has been suggested) buy officer's meal. If you ride-a-long for an entire shift, they you've done well. If you're dropped off half way through the shift, you didn't make a good impression.

Sometimes an officer will, on his own, contact a person in the agency to give them a heads up about a potentially good candidate. Sometimes.

Let us know how things turned out.

Thank you everyone for the great advice.  I took adavantage of it and the results really showed the past 2 days.  Yesterday I went on the ride along.  For a Sunday it ended up being busy with calls.  It was extrememely helpful.  The ride along was only 6 hours of the Troopers 10 hour shift but we responded to 2 accidents, pulled several people over for various violations, watched what they call a "Felony Stop" on a vehilce that came up stolen and a several other things.  I was able to create and find some great questions.  The Trooper gave me good feedback and mentioned that I was the most interactive and interested ride along he had in some time.

Then this morning I had my oral board.  The ride along really fired me up and gave me the preparation I think I was lacking.  I was able to get those nervous butterflies to fly in formation.  I passed my oral board, what else can I say?

congrats on your accomplishments thus far. Do not let your guard down now. If a career in law enforcement is what you truly desire, keep your nose clean,  finish any schooling that is required, watch your personal life, women, finances, driving record. STAY OUT OF BARS. more guys and gals get jammed up going out and end up in a jam. good luck and please keep us informed.
