Just recently Eas'd out of the beloved Corps. After 4 years and 6 months I veerped out, served in security forces guarding ballistic missles for two years with a secret clearance. Then went to 3rd battalion 7th marines ending up in Afghanistan serving as a team leader and was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps achievement medal with combat "V".Then attained my coaches cert for the rifle range where I was a block nco/ coach. Now currently going to college. I am at a crossroad I am 23 I want a BA (Gi bill so money for school is not a problem) apparently the p.o.s.t certified academy up here in sacramento counts towards criminal justice. I am considering going thru the academy and finish general ed for a AA in criminal justice so I can kill two birds with one stone (that is be certified to be a cop and hopefully be hired and be halfway to a degree) I want to start my career and get a degree also worried about not being hired etc etc. Any advice gents?? Thanks

I did have a few military veterans in my police academy who took advantage of the GI Bill for the academy. They were able to get the academy training converted into college credit hours but it wasn't enough for them to get an AA. Different state (Texas), different rules that's all. Why not take the academy classes while working towards the BA? Is that feasable for you? Is that allowable at the school you're going to? Sit down with a counselor, your work schedule and whateverelse that needs a piece of your time and see if you can work that out.

Thanks for your sevice!

Thanks for your service. I would make application while attending college. This shows character. I would attempt to be hired with an agency to draw a salary while attending versus self sponsor. The clearance will be of assistance. Best to you.

The academy is through my college, the police departments use the same academy so i will be able to have the gi bill pay for the academy and pay me bah cause its "full time " and by the next academy i will just need my lower division aka minor work which would hopefully be transferred from the academy as criminal justice credit....but say everything works out and i get my AA then hired as a officer will i have time to work for my ba and be a full time officer? Also my goal is to move back to texas and continue being a cop once i get a degree and my fiance graduates her school.

You're living in California, working towards your AA, you're having questions about getting your peace officer certification and planning to move to Texas in the near future. Accurate so far? Check with TCLEOSE, the State of Texas licensing agency for peace officers and detention officers (can't post the website here) and ask about the procedures for transfering a license from one state to another. I know there is a procedure to do it, but don't know how it works. Also, you can work towards the BA after you become a full time officer if you work for it and schedule your time to do it. Good luck!

Pretty much I want to move to Texas as soon as I can after i get my degree as well as my fiance getting hers I just want to get the "ball" rolling and get some experiance under my belt so when i do say finish my degree I'm not looking for a job or career cause I would already have one and its stable and actually savimg money for a house vs living on gi bill month to month doing full time school. Also i figured by the time I move to texas I would be a combat vet with a ba and been a full time officer...hopefully!!! but is there actual time to do college while being an officer i mean anythings possible but ample time and energy

If you want it bad enough there is a way to do it, its just finding the time and energy. The thing you need to do is prioritize what is important so that you can create the time to do everything you want to do.
