I've been introduced to the joys of parking enforcement (insert sarcastic eye roll here) and would love some good suggestions on how to de-fuse the inevetable A.H. that walks over just when I start scratching out the ticket.  What works for y'all when you have to issue a citation?

If someone gives me a hard time when I am scratching out a ticket I hook em up and take them right to the Magistrate.

I let them vent then issue the Notice To Appear and tell them to have a nice day. Slay them with kindness you can always vent to us on here later about what a jerk they were. LOL

Remember, that some "Attitude Hostiles" will NEVER be de-fused and there is nothing anyone can do to de-fuse them.  If you are in the right. . . . .then I wouldn't worry too much about it.  If they issue some kind of recording equipment, make sure it is on.  If they don't, you can go to Staples or Wal Mart or any place that sells electronics and pick up a digital recorder for under $100.00.  Make sure it is on when A.H. comes up so you have cooberating evidence of what you did.  Remember though, that recording doesn't care who is in the right (or wrong) and the blade that the recording carries swings both ways.  I advise you of that so that you will remember to keep your cool when talking with people.  Don't take it personally and you should not have any problems.

Next, find a good physical activity that you enjoy doing (i.e. running, martial arts, etc. . . .) anything that eases your mind and allows you to release the day's steam without damaging anything (like the walls, your knuckles, spouses body, etc. . . . .).  Like gudercop said, you can always "vent" here.

Almost forgot, when the ultimate Attitude Hostile comes around,  you can always have an officer come by.  Not something you want to rely on, on a regular basis. . . . .but when the "over-the-top" person comes along. . . . it's nice to know that you don't have to take it completely yourself.

I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them.

A few years ago, I was assigned to take care of illegal parking issues in front of one of our schools.  People were reported double and triple parking as well as parking in a "No Stopping" zone complete with signs and red painted curb.  I positioned myself down the road and watched as two vehicles parked in the red zone, one right behind the other.  I positioned myself along the side of one vehicle and began writing the citation for the driver of the white Chevy pick up truck.  Wanting to make sure I put the right model into the appropriate box, I approached the driver and asked him what model truck it was.  Rather than answering my question, he proceeds to ask me what the problem was.  I asked him a second time what kind of truck it was.  He answers that it is a Silverado and again asks me what the problem was.  When I told him that he had parked his car in a no stopping zone, the following exchange took place.

DRIVER:  I'm not parked

ME:  You're not?

DRIVER:  No, I'm not.

ME:  Really?  How so?

DRIVER:  No....  My key is in the ignition, my engine is on and my transmission is in drive.

ME:  The curb to your right..... Is it red?

DRIVER:  Yes

ME:  The sign right in front of you..... Does it say "NO STOPPING" ?

DRIVER:  Yes

ME:  Are you stopped?

DRIVER:  Yes

ME:  Here's your citation.

Here's one idea.....................

- Get a big empty box and put a brick in it for weight. (Duct tape it down so it doesn't slide.)

- Tape a picture of a car boot on the box.

- Tape it up with some UPS or USPS Tape and make it look like a brand new one just arrived.

- If they give you a hard time, pull the box out of trunk and say "Finally..., I've been waiting to use this new one"...wait moment for attitude change !

- However, if they grab box and run away with it....--> issue ticket quick... before they find the brick.

Another thing I have done is give them the option of a "TICKET" or only a "CITATION" purposely making the "TICKET" option look much worse than the "CITATION" option.  Now, they are the same thing, but the involved party doesn't need to know that.  When given the option, they choose the "CITATION" and go away happy that they did not get a "TICKET,"

If they come across a first class Richard Head then I will listen to their gripe and continue writing the ticket and then issue it. If they are nice about it I often explain that I have already started writing it and have to issue it and call the court and ask them to void it. I have only done that a few times, but then I don't write too many tickets anymore even at my part-time cop job...

I would just ignore them and finish the ticket.  Then as soon as I was done and placed it on the car I'd turn around a look surprised when I see them and say "Whoa, when did you get here?  Can I help you?".  Ya, I'm one of those people that if your a "PITA" to me, I'll be one right back (without you ever knowing).

i know i'm being annoying but wouldn't it be best to stick to procedure? that way no one get's to complaining either way. because both parties know it is a fair deal. if the civilian does indeed send a letter of complaint you can always say you did exactly as you were instructed to and as such you in no way violated any rights the civilan may claim you violated.I don't know obviously but that seems like a good solution for both parties? If you stick to procedure and the civilian stil gives you a headache than you can make a notation regarding their behavior somewhere right?

But then its no fun

Half the battle is getting through the day, especially when confronted by these types of "malcontents". "I pay your salary" is my favorite line they use. I usually would follow it with "Then I want a raise because I have to deal with people like you."

Humor, at their expense or not, helps getting through it. It must be aprropriate to the circumstances. This is where you have to know how to read people. Some will be okay with it, some will run right into HQ with a complaint. Use your discretion. As for those who keep coming at you and won't shut up, I would tell them that the more they yell, the more it makes me want to write more tickets. (One guy actually talked himself into FOUR more tickets before he got the message.)

You may be over thinking this. I assume you are new in your job. As time goes on it gets easier. Just tune them out. I was only concerned if they put their hands on me. As time goes on you will learn how to read people. I carried a pocket recorder most of the time. It did assist me with some complaints. Relax and take a deep breath.

sorry..........but..............i think it is outrageous that people complain when they get their tickets. can't they show a little responsibility? Are these people usually in high end positions where they feel entitled to complain? or is it just every day people??

You make an assumption that all people are like you and respond as you would and courteously accept the ticket or citation as issued for the offense committed.  The reality is that many people have the mistaken belief that because they pay our salary, that they are entitled, that we should be seeking "real criminals" instead of giving them a parking cite (over time parking / handicapped etc) or other moving violation.  These people come from all walks of life.  They may be rich or on welfare.  They may be business men/women, regular working class or unemployed.  They may be juveniles, they may be college students.  They may be the children of public officials including the children of police officers.  You need to schedule a ride-along and take in the verbal abuse we get on a regular basis to gain a minor understanding of what really happens.

BTW:  If my kids ever pulled a stunt like that and I found out about it (and I would find out), they would feel my wrath as a parent, regardless of age.  My position does NOT give them an excuse to violate the law or be disrespectful to other LE doing their job because they violated the law and got caught.

I see your point, however, i'm hoping to find some pointers on how to use humor or ideas on how to get them to CHILL enough for me to finish what i'm doing.  Thanks for yoru opinion.

oh ok. sorry. um i sometime notice that when you remain calm and collected initally after being presented with an obnoxious person out to stir drama....if you stay calm for the few minutes.......they begin to simmer down........than you can start up again being less calm and raising the tension.....this will confuse them.........than after that ( if they continue up again) start speaking in strong le lingo that they wouldn't easily understand. point out guidelines straight from police protocal in regards to the situation in a quick but thorough manner......they won't know what your talking about and will most likely give up and shut up? :) at this point than you can smile and throw a little humor in so they look like the overly aggressive/non compliant party. they won't know whether to laugh or scream. :) i  hope that helps.

Uh...... No.  Like I said, go on some ride-alongs and see what really happens to us on a regular basis.  How we respond is contingent upon the individual.  Some people may get it and there is no issue.  More often than not, we deal with people who believe they are entitled and that we are targeting them specifically.  They profess their vast knowledge of the legal system, gleaned from watching way too many movies and TV shows, throw out names and people that they think may influence us into changing our minds about the cite.  They become belligerent.  These are the people we deal with regularly.
