Hello everyone-

I am a criminal justice instructor at a community college in rural Iowa. Every year over spring break we take a trip to a large city and participate in tours and ride alongs to expose our students to law enforcement in a larger community. We typically have 10-15 students participate. This year we have requested ride alongs in several cities and have had no success in finding an agency that is willing or able to accomodate our students. I am checking to see if anyone on the board knows that their department has a ride along program that we could check into. Most require riders to be citizens or business owners in the community. Any information or assistance would be appreciated.

Greetings from Kansas,
We are a little further than what you may want to gamble with , but our agency mentors CJ Students with ride alongs and internships. In the past they have even assisted withsome externships. If you are interested in an internship option this far south feel free to send me a PM or fax me your information at 785-368-2342. Hope this will help...

I would concentrate on departments in your state. Why not assign the students to locate an agency and make the request? It would help them grow. You joined today and have a skeleton profile not to mention this is your first post. Cops are suspicious by nature. What institution employes you? Many members will not respond due to minimal information. Tell us something about yourself.

Thanks for the replies so far. This is a spring break trip that the CJ students take part in and write papers about to receive credit. It is seperate from their required internship. Students in the program have previously traveled to Boulder, Minneapolis, Baton Rouge, and Oklahoma City for ride alongs. We are looking for other agencies so we do not wear out our welcome by using the same departments year after year.

I was a police officer/K-9 officer and Chief of Police for 20+ years in Iowa. After returning from some overseas contract missions with the United Nations I finished my Masters degree and now teach criminal justice in far Northern Iowa at Iowa Lakes Community College.

Quite a resume.  A friend of mines father was a Sgt. with the NYPD who also went overseas (Bosnia) as part of an International Police Force.

Have ASP will travel.

Justice is the one thing you should always find, you gotta saddle up your boys you gotta draw a hard line.

When the gun smoke settles we'll sing a victory tune and we'll all meet back at the local saloon.

And we'll raise up our glasses against evil forces singing whiskey for my men beer for my horses.

I did Bosnia in 1999-2000 and Kosovo 2007-2008. Had a great time and met some great people on both of those missions. Had the great idea of doing a few contracts in Iraq 2004-2006, surprisingly that wasn't near as much fun : )

I understand waivers are executed by the students regarding liability however, always wondered if there are some loop holes if a student is injured while on a ride along? A community near me had a ride a long (high school student) who was discovered with handcuffs and a short billy club. To make matters worst while the officer was outside the unit the student entered some data on the computer. After this incident they had some changes in policy. Nearby agencies were apprised of this and the student is on a no ride a long list.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply here and give input and suggestions. I found a department who will work with us and am ironing out the details for a great trip for our students.
