Posted 4 months ago Hi there. I'm new (obviously) and a little nervous to be poking around on these forums; I certainly hope I can fit in to the flow of conversation without sticking my foot in my mouth too many times. My husband of 8 years is about to test for the Police Academy in Texas where we live. We just brought our first son home through adoption and I work in marketing and am also a writer. I'm here because I'm nervous about many things regarding my husband's possible new career path and am hoping to find some support as well as have my questions answered. Thank you all for your time. |

Posted 4 months ago Welcome to PL! I've noted over the years the increasing numbers of family members who've joined the site and how often they've received very good information within the online support network. Best wishes to you in finding the same rewarding connections here at PL, and Good Luck to your husband in his LE career endeavors!

Posted 4 months ago Welcome to Police Link from California. I hope you find the answers you are looking for. That said (and please don't think I am being sarcastic), not being a mind reader, you might list some of your concerns, fears and or other things that are making you nervous about his choice of LE as a career.

Posted 4 months ago Welcome to police link. One step at a time. He sounds like he has a way to go before he gets hired. Have ASP will travel. Justice is the one thing you should always find, you gotta saddle up your boys you gotta draw a hard line. When the gun smoke settles we'll sing a victory tune and we'll all meet back at the local saloon. And we'll raise up our glasses against evil forces singing whiskey for my men beer for my horses.

Posted 4 months ago As the wife of an applicant you will be part of the hiring process. The background investigator will/should interview you with your thoughts and concerns. If you inform him/her it may cause some financial hardships this will be considered. It takes a special person to be married to a cop. Keep reading.

Posted 4 months ago I feel that I should add that my husband is a very service oriented person. This has made him very good at his job as a restaurant manager, bartender, waiter, photographer and member of the community. He's a good dad and has been more hands-on and involved in taking care of our 3 month old son than most dads probably are. I love him and believe is a good man- better than most. I'm just having a hard time.

Posted 4 months ago Welcome to PL from the midwest. If your husband is being paid to attend the academy, it sounds like he has already been hired. I don't know any agency that will pay someone to attend an academy w/o hiring them first. If you could elaborate on this it would be helpful.

Posted 4 months ago I thought alot about this topic the last couple of hours. My husband was a police officer when I married him. A long time veteran. I imagine that he probably did change from the average everyday citizen. We don't always think about the horrors that these officers see day in and day out. The senseless acts. The utter stupidity of people when they are drunk or drugged out. Dealing with people who are having the worst day of their life. The officers on PL make it look easy. God Bless you. To the original OP you will be just fine. In the end you will make the best descision you can for yourself. It may not be easy but you already have the answer.

Posted 4 months ago Now I'm confused. Your first comment you stated your husband is about to test for the academy. Your last comment was he receives a salary to attendi the academy. Which is it? Has he been hired by a police agency? Was he hired the past few days? I am not attempting to lean on you however, your comments in my opinion don't jive. I await your response.

Posted 4 months ago I have no idea why I am so suspicious. You may be over thinking this. If he is just beginning the hiring process it may be 6 to 8 months before if/when appointed. I suggest you speak to a professional as thousands of wives has been there and survived the transaction. I am attempting to get a read on you and will continue to view your comments. Please continue to post.

Posted 4 months ago Um. Suspicious? Overthinking what? The possible drastic life change if he becomes a cop? Taking very seriously whether or not I am the "special woman" everyone talks about you must be to be a cops wife? With all due respect, I think I'm just being realistic and smart to think through how this will affect my marriage, my spouse and me personally (as I have trauma triggers associated with LE). I'm aware that he will likely not attend the academy for another six months. I'm slightly confused as to why you need to get a read on me.
