Some things to consider:

1.  LEOs here, by and large, support the Second Amendment.  Heartily.

2.  LEOs ALSO find themselves in the line of fire.  Check out the LODD stats.

3.  In supporting the Second Amendment, LEOs here show a surprising level of faith in the judgment of John/Jane Q. Public gunowners.

We can draw from this that LEOs want to see Americans able to protect themselves and their freedoms.

Sooo...If LEOs can show that much faith in us, maybe the cynics need to rethink THEIR ideas about our society.

I'm bowing out of this discussion for several reasons.  All political discussions end in a fight.  Oh, wait, do the PL critical thinkers brawl?  This topic is spoiling for a fight and the bell is ringing for the next round. Keep in mind everything discussed here is interwoven to some degree.

I'm calling foul on my own response.

Here's a fresh view, take it or leave it:

I see the whole country talking about keeping guns away from criminals. It looks to me like we all want the same result: less crime. I see an easy answer, more funding for law enforcement. Why is that not the main topic? I see new laws suggested, executive orders, all kinds of arguing. COPS are our defense against civilian threats. COPS are not being properly funded in most areas these days. COPS enforce the laws that are already in place that are being broken by CRIMINALS like the CT shooter. JUDGES are supposed to recognize when those criminals have no remorse or are likely to do it again, and lock em up for as long as possible. JAILS are supposed to have enough SPACE and MONEY to keep criminals behind bars for the DURATION of their sentence. When I see a lot of talk that skirts the real issues at hand I get nervous. Thats what I see with this whole issue. Gun law changes are irrelevant, the people we are all concerned with are not concerned about the law. Who is in the White House is also irrelevant to this issue. FUND COPS, hold judges accountable, and provide adequate prisons. It wouldn't hurt to lock up the criminally insane either. I have worked in Mental Health and I've seen violent people released over and over again. FUNDING. The topic we as a nation are really avoiding.

More funding for cops? Whodathunk?

...The President is calling on Congress to act on the Administration’s $4 billion proposal to help keep 15,000 cops on the street....

(From the President's plan, page 6. More LE supportive measures on 6, 7, 8 and possibly other pages. Stop worrying about an assault weapons ban. All legislative items require Congressional action and no politically unpalatable measures will pass--and FYI, any palpable restrictions on guns is a no-go.)

You know what else would be nice? If people would stop pretending these proposals represent an existential crisis and start paying attention to the parts that could contribute to the solution and have a chance at Congressional approval. If you keep on faithfully pledging your allegiance to unimaginative NRA talking points, you will fail to give your legislators the encouragement they need to stop letting the NRA bully them away from meaningful action as well.

Then again, I'm largely wasting my breath. People don't bother to read the materials. They just run off and eagerly post inane FB memes without any consideration of the available facts.

I can totally understand why any Socialist Liberal would either bow out of or not participate in a "COMMON SENSE FORUM QUESTION LIKE THIS ONE" . I can only express my thoughts in a polite manner by stating the obvious "TAKE A LOOK BACK AT HISTORY FOR THE PAST 100 YEARS AND SEE THE PARALLEL THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION HAS WITH SOCIALIST LIBERAL DOCUMENTED HISTORY".

Would it be possible for any "LAW ABIDING CRIMINAL TO CARE HOW MANY LAWS THEY BREAK IN THE COURSE OF THE NORMAL CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE BUSINESS DAY" , HAS IT EVER BEEN KNOWN TO HAPPEN THAT A CRIMINAL LAW HAS STOPPED A CRIMINAL ACT ?

I chose to send you a PM instead of calling you something you usually are not here in a public forum.  You missed the entire, sarcastic toned, point of my response.

Sincerely,

DL

I just assumed he was referring to me. I also just assumed you were being sarcastic--I mean...like...when are you not?

The tide of popular opinion has turned against the Second Amendment and many people do support limitations on it. However the Second was created to defend the First. I wonder what would happen if the tide turns against "Right to Assemble" or "Trial by Jury" what do we do then?  We do nothing because we have allowed others to take away the ability to protect our Consitutional rights.

If you are fine with them taking away rights you don't agree with what happens when they come to take away the ones you support?

LonnaNJ,

Snipped:

Oh, and  as for the links I said was hard to submit, before you call someone stupid my dear wise one, Did you take the Hyphen out?  It brings you to slate, then hit Politics. The other takes you to other article, but the 16 MASS shootings article is as bright as day.

LonnaNJ, I took the hyphens out and came up with the same, Now I didn't try putting in colons instead of the semi colons on one of them.

I am locking this thread for the night and want you all to calm down a bit. I will open it back up tomorrow.
