I like to sit back and let the other old guys/gals say it like it is and agree with them, saves on they typing. Good luck and be safe, you are embarking on a lifestyle and a great one at that.  Welcome to PoliceLink.

Let me congratulate you. I cannot expound any more than what the finest here have already stated save this:

I retired after 40 years. I have seen far too many officers come and go in my tenure because of a lack of maturity that came with their young age. Give me a 30 year old any day and I will be a happy supervisor. To relate one story, I was offered a lateral transfer at the age of 54. I had no intention of leaving my current department and had not sought a change. They sought me. The reason? They needed maturity. Their department was predominately under 30 and male.

I envy you. You are beginning your adventure. Doing good police work is the most fun a person can have in life. Use your maturity to your advantage. You have more life experience, you are wiser more controlled. As others have heard me state, the last rookie I had the pleasure of training as their FTO was by far the finest police officer I have had the honor to train and serve with in 20 years, a 30 year old woman!

Congrats again. Be safe and most of all, HAVE FUN!

Relax and take a deep breath as you are over thinking this. Keep in mind while in the academy you not a cop but a student. If the instructors are tough it is nothing personal.

30?? OLD??? Not. Average age of my academy class - 32. As for cell phones .... not quite available back then, but, we were able to collectively coop our pidgeons.

Seriously, good luck, keep your chin up, eyes and ears wide open. If it wasn't for the support of my family I might not have made it through.

First week of training is under my belt. I cannot believe how much information I have absorbed! That being said, this is both the most difficult and exciting thing I have ever done. It is physically and mentally exhausting. I just finished my Intro to CJ homework and am very thankful for the three-day weekend to recover. I am so very happy to be home with my family! I hope you all have a great weekend!!

Congrats on completing the first week.  The mental/physical stress and strain will get worse.  But you've got a great attitude and suport from your family to see you through.  And, your "advanced years" and life experiences will be worth a million bucks if you can think when your tired.

My ex was a police dispatcher, and let me use him once for a practice dummy. After I put all 6' 200+ pounds of him on the floor, none too gently and much to his chagrin, he never allowed me to try any of the techniques I'd lreaned on him again.

:)  That is great!  My husband has been wonderful at reviewing 10-codes with me when I am home for the weekend.  Not sure I will be able to talk him into practicing defensive tactics....

Tomorrow starts week three!  Last week provided us with an incredible amount of entertaining information from a couple different fascinating instructors and we ended with the stress of four tests on Friday.  I still feel like this is the most amazing and exciting experience I have ever had, especially as far as education goes.  There is just so much to learn!

Congrats on another week and indeed it is amazing and fasinating. You are about to enter a  completely new world and way of life.In a big city as I worked I saw more raw down to earth ,unbelieveable things in any given week than most civilians could ever encounter in a life time.Keep on keeping on and great that your husband is helping you.

You go GIRL !!! Hang in there and keep on keeping on ! My hubby was AP back in the dark ages, so he has never minded helping me out practicing DT. Now a funny story : When my oldest was about 4, hubby and I were doing speed cuffing practice. Well, hubby cuffed me and Deuce burst into tears. "TAKE THOSES UGLY SILVER BRACELETS OFF MY MAMA!!!!"" at the top of his lungs. Since then, that's what I"ve called my cuffs, my ugly silver bracelets. It's nice in conversation to say something like "keep that up and I'll let you wear my ugly silver bracelets" to one of my offenders. LOL
