TankJones33 says ...

 (See above.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++=

We can break this down pretty quick:

1. You forgot to pay your car insurance and it was canceled. *May be construed as a lack responsibility and attention to detail.*

2. You had the option of paying your hospital bills or filing for bankruptcy. You chose bankruptcy. *May again be construed as a lack of responsibility, personal pride/integrity, and a propensity to take the easy way out.*

3. Marijuana usage. *Varies among agencies*

4. Hydrocodone usage/misappropriation. *Varies among agencies.*

How old are you? It sounds like 2009 was the year of poor decision making and life changing choices. I'd strongly suggest you spend the next 7 or so years (2009 + 10yrs) working on paying back the hospital bills and putting your house in order. You may be in a better position to apply after that has been completed.

Since we cannot change the past just be honest. You have been discharged of your debt in bankruptcy.court.  Keep in mind if you pay one thin dime it could open it up for all creditors. The marijuana use in 2009 may need additional time. Agencies like a 5 year window. Just explain the lack of insurance coverage. The details of the accident will not matter. I will admit you have a hill to climb and may need to put a police position on ice for 2 or 3 more years. I am curious of your level of education. Pursue a degree if you don't have one. DO NOT attempt to sugar coat your past as the investigators have heard every story imaginable. Please come back and apprise us with the results. I failed to address the perscription pill you received from a friend. In my opinion this act will be the most damaging. Remember be honest.

After giving this some additional thought I think Hydrocodone is a controlled substance. You may check with the controlled substance act. If so and you took another persons perscription this may likely be the kiss of death. You need to research this on your own.

I would discuss it with them. Do not attempt to lie or hide the truth. A polygraph will also bring it out. I know while I was chief I would over look a little marijuana use however, never hard drugs. I still feel you need to put this on ice for at least two years. I cannot speak for other agencies. Man up and do not attempt to sugar coat it by saying you were in pain.

I still have problems with 'forgot' to pay my car insurance.  My insurance company always sends me a reminder about a month before a policy expires that includes a 'due by' date, usually about 4 weeks away.  So the only way I could 'forget' to pay my car insurance is to ignore the renewal notice, a different proposition IMO.

Not judging you here but let me say this, as a LEO your life will be hectic pretty much every single day of your career. I know mine is. If you aren't on duty or taking classes you will be training or doing other things. In the meantime you will be trying to balance your family life and catching up with them. You NEED to have your life in order or you WILL find yourself in a very chaotic situation...........and trying to find an excuse for it. Things like credit, vehicle insurance are important. Knowing that taking a non-prescribed hydrocodone (a felony in my state) is wrong is also important. Think about it like this, when making decisions if you have to ask yourself more than once if it is right then you must know it is wrong. This job is unlike any other. We are charged with the responsibility of upholding the law as written, not allowing excuses to cloud our judgement. It sounds harsh but when looked at through the prism we have to look through it makes perfect sense.

You can't cure stupid.
