Welcome! What kind of law enforcement are you interested in, like Municipal, State, Federal, Corrections... ? Do you plan on entering the academy soon, or are you working on an education?

Looking to start out in municipal then eventually get into state. I am trying to figure my best route to go for schooling. Is it easy to go to college, get with a municipality or find an academy?

Well, I know that having a degree will make you look a lot better to a department when you're applying, but it's definitely not unheard of people getting hired straight out of academy! I have no personal experience with this process, I'm just going off of what other people have told me, but I'd recommend actively applying to all the departments you can, even if you aren't planning on joining anytime soon. While you are in college, or in academy, or doing whatever it is that you are doing, you will be getting experience with the tests. By the time you feel like actually joining a department, it'll be a piece of cake and you won't be nervous at all! At least that's what I've heard. :D

In Illinois we cannot go to the academy w/o being hired by a department. The Bloomington/Normal depts both seem to be very good to work for.   I tested for both in the past and turn out for both as well over 100.  The ISP requires a four year degree and/or prior LE experience.

Wow, really? That kind of stinks. I really hope there isn't anything like that that I don't know about here in PA! I guess I would have heard about it already if there was, though. ^__^

Many law enforcement agencies require at least an Associates.Federal agencies require a Bachelors unless you transfer over from another agency with at least five years experience. That is,however ,just the D.E.A. and/or the A.T.F..The..F.B.I. the C.I.A.,the N.S.A. and Secret Service still require the Bachelors.

In MT if you have a pulse and are over 18 YOA you can get hired and as long as you do not have a felony on your record. Good luck in your future aspirations.
